I'm new to the forum and new to Jeeps. I've always loved the look of jeeps its just never been practical to own one. Recent events in my life have made me feel that practical doesn’t really matter I'm getting a jeep. I am not a mechanic but have done some basic stuff. (Brakes, AC repair, oil changes) My dad is a mechanic so I have access to a fully stocked shop and any tools I should need. My kids always love helping me work on the cars so I want to take an older jeep and really fix it up with their help. Create something we can all be proud of.
My question is what year model should I look for if my primary focus is a family build by a novice mechanic? I'd rather not have to deal with much electrical work. I'm trying to keep my initial investment in the jeep to around $5000. I hope to find one that is running so that I can focus most of my additional money into upgrades. My end goal will be a secondary vehicle that I can drive to work occasionally but also be able to hit the mud or trails on the weekends with the kiddos. Any help or advice you can provide would be greatly appreciated.
