Dirts 98 XJ Build Thread

This will be my build thread for my Forest Green 98 XJ. This is more for my records than anything as this build won't be that exciting. I plan to use the XJ as my DD as my TJ has gotten so far into rock crawler mode that it's no longer practical to use as a driver.

My TJ build thread can be seen here: http://www.jeepforum.com/forum/f22/d...hread-1093900/

Anyhow, I looked for quite a while before I found what I was looking for, a 98 XJ, 6cyl auto. Had to have a clean interior, and a good body. I found this and paid $3,000 for it.

She's bone stock. Right down to the AM/FM RADIO (gonna have to change that!) She's got a HP D30 up front, and a D35 with LSD in back, and a 231 TC.

On the 60 mile drive home, the fan clutch gave up and embeded the fan into the radiator... So AAA took her the rest of the way. - - I could only laugh. The guy that sold it to me sent me a check for $200 to pay for parts, so that's cool.

She got a new radiator, new fan and new fan clutch.
Also bought a stearing wheel cover, hatch shocks, and some smell good stuff to set under the seat. (Vanilla Jasmin, HAHAH)

Plans are to get her road worthy again. She's gonna need a new exhaust, I've got a clunk under the hood, I'm thinking motor mount or tranny mount.. I'm changing out all the fluids today, Motor, Trans, TC, and axles front and rear, then we'll see how she feels.

Future plans are:
-4" lift (Iron Rock off road)
-32" all-terrain tires and steal soft 8 rims
-Roof rack
-I'm liking JCR offroads front and rear bumpers and a set of rock sliders.
-Cut n fold the fenders and remove the flairs.
-Some sort of discos for the sway bar. (JKS maybe?)

I still have a lot of homework to do to choose what parts I'm gonna put on this thing, I think it would look cool having the 98 forest green XJ flat towing the 98 forest green TJ to the trail head,...

Down the road I'll probably instal alloy shafts in the axles just for peace of mind, but this jeep is NOT going to get on the rocks. That's what the TJ is for.

Probably, although 32s arent that big, I don't want the thing working too hard to get me down the road either.
I'll know more after the lift and wheels are on.

So I spent most of the day going between DMV and the Smog shop getting the title squared away, so I didn't have time to change any fluids... I did throw it on the lift for a minute and saw the broken motor mount... checked the diffs, they're full and the front looks pretty clean, gonna change it anyhow.
I also checked out the stearing linkage, all is tight, the control arm bushings are shot to hell, so I'll probably put some JKS control arms in at the time of the lift. I couldnt see an exhaust leak from under, so it's probably at the head pipe.

Productive day today for the XJ, I changed out the diff oil, front and rear, changed the motor oil and the tranny oil.
I also changed a broken motor mount and installed a thermostat.

Still has some wierd noises coming from it, doesn't matter if it's moving or stopped, and does it in all gears incl park.

Scored a roof rack off a kid that bought one of them plasma tables for $150, also got a set of take off, 30" BFG ATs from the local 4WP store.

My pops came over and helped me wash it, we mounted the spare and the jack where they're s'posed to be.

going to Panamint for Easter weekend, we're gonna take both jeeps.

Took the flairs and plastic bumper end caps off today, then got a couple cans of the rustolium rattle bomb bed liner stuff and sprayed where the flairs used to be and the bottom of the doors, rocker area.

Took her for an 'easy' drive.

Wierd, I posted an update with pics, guess it didn't stick... here's the short story:

My father went with us to Panamint for Easter weeeknd, he drove my XJ a total of almost 600 miles.

slapped on some home brew bumpers just before we left.

XJ and my TJ outside the store in Ballarat mining town:

Did some wheeling, got some custom pin striping.

TJ and XJ outside Barker Ranch - This was where Manson lived when he was arrested in 69.

Good first trip for the XJ, The drivers seat broke where the seat bolts to the slider, so I took the seat out and welded it back together. All good now.
