Dirts 98 TJ "Runt" LCG Build thread

I bought "Runt" in Feb of this year with the intention of haveing a mild rock crawler and daily driver... But the longer I have her, the more I go t'wards Rock crawler and less t'wards DD.

Bought "Runt" in Feb of 2010, a 98 6 cyl TJ with AC and a Hard Top

Here's what aftermarket stuffs she had on at the time:
2.5" Rancho Rock Crawler lift
Ox Locker in the D35
3.73 gears
285/75/16 KM2s on Rubicon alloy wheels
Unknown name Aluminum rock sliders



Not bad for $7000 - No rust, but was missing the rear seat, and carpet. (easy craigslist finds)

Sence then I've added the following:
sh!ttybuilt front bumper
Rampage rear bumper w/ tire carrier and lights
Rampage frameless soft top
High Lift jack mounted on hood
sh!ttybuilt 8000# winch and winch plate
No Name brand stearing linkage (bought at TDS event to replace broken one on the trail)
4- Hella 500 with Daystar switches in the vents
Cobra CB, Firestick etc... the kind where all the controls are on the mic
Flush mount tail lights



Stuff I made:
Custom built a stinger, 1.5" .120 wall DOM Chromolly
1.25" seat riser (aluminum block with a hole drilled thru it)
Custom built hard trail doors 12 ga Chromolly (stripped the canvas off a set of spice Bestop doors and welded the chromolly plate to them, then had them powder coated satin black)

Here's a pic of the doors


Now here's where we went from cool to COOL:
(5) 15x8 pro Comp 98 series wheels
(5) 35x12.5-15 pro Comp Mud Terrains
1" wheel spacers
4:88 gears front and rear (Advance Adapters)
MCE Flattie Fenders
LED blinkers under the headlights
JKS ACOS set at 3/4" (front only)

This is how "Runt" looks now.



Durring all this I found my "easter-egg" While doing the rear gears, we discovered there was a "S35" kit in the rear, not a supirior one, but better than stock for sure, My D35 has 30 spline Alloy USA axle shafts in it. pretty neet!

I've also done the maintenance/replacement parts that come with a 12 year old vehicle with 106,000 on the clock...

new battery
exhaust manifold
tranny mount
brakes/pads
radiator
thermostat
oil pan

Next week I'm installing:
SYE
Drive shaft
adjustable upper rear control arms
Under Cover Fabworks Deep cover skid plate system with LOPRO mount (should add ~2" clearance and cover my unders)

Future mods:
real Superior S35 w/ARB and truss work
Superior S30 w/ARB
Fuel tank skid
Full corners
Sterio system

So I've got a 2.5" lift with 35s stuffed under it, that articulates pretty darn good.
"Runt" handles all the trails in SoCal with only one mishap so far (locker creap put me on my side, cosmetic damage only)

More updates as they happen...
What do you guys think of my LCG build?

Thanks, It was realy pretty easy, a little plasma cutting - a little welding... the powdercoaters did the hard work. LOL

I like the look of 35's on a 2.5" lift. Do you rub in the back or have you adjusted your bumpstops to suit?

I rub just a little. Once I get the SYE etc in I'll be installing the ACOS on the rear as well. I didn't put it in yet because my driveline angles are already bad... I only have 2 spare u-joins and don't like changing them while laying on the rocks.

Installed:
New rebuilt TC with HD chain, bearings, seals, etc.
Adjustable rear upper control arms (pro-comp)
Adjustable rear track bar (Teraflex)
SYE (Currie)
rear shock mount adapters (Teraflex) - So the shocks don't hit the spring seats when the axle is clocked upwards

This is in prep for my undercover fab works full skid and LOPRO tranny mount that UPS has and can't seam to get on a damn truck... my wife spent a total of 45 mins on the phone with them trying to figure out where the heck my skid is... they still don't know

I installed the ARCOS on the rear and didn't like them. The rear end was slightly higher than the front with them bottomed out.
I could have leveled the heep out by raising the front, then I figured that'd kinda be cheating. If I wanted a higher lift, I should put on a higher lift.

By "sh!ttybuilt front bumper" do you mean junk or that it is a Smittybilt bumper that is junk?

For some reason, your control arm angles (and driveline angle) looks incredibly high....way more than 2.5". Like 4-5". Just saying.

Lets just say I'm not a huge fan of smittybuilts welds, their hole alignment, their missing hardware, or their habit of breaking rear tire carriers on the trail.

Before I got the Rampage rear tire carrier I had a smittybuilt one, One of my wheelin buddys had the same one with a 30" tire (i had a 32" at the time) and we both broke them at the spindle. (crap welds, too hot, not enough fill, and too thin of material - I think they use sub standard mild steel in china) also the bolt holes had to be ovaled out to fit, and they were missing hardware. The front didnt fit much better.

I have a smittybuilt XRC winch that so far has worked fine, but hasn't been used much. I had a smittybuilt bikini top... fit like crap.

They all fit my budget at the time, but if I had waited and bought good stuff to begine with instead of buying cheep then upgrading, I'd have saved a bit of $$$

Bottom line is: You get what you pay for.

how do you like the currie tail shaft conversion? my re hack and tap fits loose on the output shaft and causes things to oscialate, im looking at other sye's and the currie would be great since my new tom woods driveshaft has the 1310 cv flange mount. do you have any issues with yours?
