Just purchased my 1997 TJ Sport this past December and now it is time to start building her up. A one owner with only 80K miles. Soft top and half doors with the 4.0L in line 6 and 3 speed auto.
The previous owner is an older gentleman who is a mechanical engineer, so he took pretty good care of her. He did some modifications himself,( new shocks w/ about 3/4" lift, stainless steel brake lines, new radiator, tires, wheels, brakes and more. Downside is I really do not know all of what he had done yet. I know he did not change axles, gears or anything like that, so most of this jeep is stock and most of what he has done was just maintenance.
So anyway, I am not sure where to start. She does have some problems. A slight wobble at take off, and a sort of grind when I turn my wheels hard right both forward and reverse. I think I will start there, and have no idea what I am in for.
I will get pics of her on here soon!!!
This is sure to be a great adventure and I can not wait to get started!!!
I went to a 4X4 Parts store and looked around for ideas yesterday, and maybe left there even more confused on what to do to my TJ. Since I am not really a mechanic or tech, so many things that I read or look at, I just don't understand. I do know that I need to get her on a lift and do some serious snooping around underneath. I think the first things I need to do are all service related, like change all the fluids like transfer case, axles, transmission, oil and such. Hmmmmmmmm, I bet there might even be some grease fittings under there.
Great advise for sure and thanks DKenyon28 and Cuder!!!
As far as the wobble, the steering wheel doesn't wobble, and the shifter is automatic, but I can feel it and here it. Not a hard wobble and only on take off for just a moment.
I am headed outside right now to figure out what gears I have and such and take my first pictures of her to post on here. I really like the forum and there seems to be so many friendly, knowledgeable people on here!!! Jeepsters are such AWESOME people.
Not sure if I want to do it, but the first thing I might do after the fluids and such might be taking off the "milk jugs".
