75 Days until BJHF

I did some more suspension cycling last night to make sure my shocks will clear once and for all and to test the new front trac bar.

Shock clearance to frame at full droop. The shock body measures 2.25" so I will have about an inch between the shock and the frame.

20130403_211607.jpg

Shock clearance to tire at full stuff. I will again have about an inch of clearance.

20130403_211846.jpg

Track bar at full stuff on passenger side. Damn close to the diff, but it fits.

20130403_213556.jpg

Track bar at full stuff on drivers side. Again, damn close to the diff.

20130403_214209.jpg

One more shot of the suspension flexed to the max.

20130403_212814.jpg

I found the limit of the rear suspension...that sucks, I hoped it had no limit. The upper links twist and contact the frame brackets limiting my flex. I am about an inch short of maxing out my shocks at full droop. Looks like I need to get rid of the rubber bushings on the axle end to get the rest of my flex. That may be part of the next phase of the build due to the usual constraints... time and money.

The sun finally shone in Pa today. I took advantage by putting a couple of coats of POR15 on the frame. That stuff brushes on really nice and covers great. I did two coats on the frame and both axles and only used 1/2 quart. Once it dries good I will put it back on jack stands and pull all of the links and get them painted up as well as inside to link brackets.

45 Days until BJHF

Been gone for a while working on some of my other junk. Had issues with the Trailblazer and the mower, but back on the Jeep now.

Got the tub back on and the firewall painted.

Will be ordering two Ballistic Air Shocks tomorrow. Don't have the funding for all 4 yet, but happy to get 2 on the way at least. Will be working on getting the cage in and tied into the rear shock hoops in the next few days.

It stalled a bit. I didn't make my dead line and summer came and the build stalled. I am back on it now and will post some updates soon. The engine is in with home built engine and tranny mounts. Preparing myself for wiring now, have been for a couple weeks. will start actual wiring this weekend. Thanks for watching and checking in.

Ok....here are some updated pics as requested. I will try to keep this updated a little better now since I am actually getting things done again.

Some shots of the new 5.2, motor mounts, and tranny mount. I will still need to modify the tranny mount for front drive shaft clearance, but at least is is doing its job and holding the tranny in place.

Engine in its new home with all of the accessories back on.

I have spent a couple weeks reading other builds and reading the FSM for the Grand Cherokee to prepare for wiring. Started tracing and labeling wires this weekend. I am in no hurry at this point. I plan on spending about a month on the wiring.

I didn't get any work done on the wiring this week. Had too many other things come up. My son had a band banqeut and we took him to a symphony and I had to remodel a bedroom for the wife's aunt and uncle. I did take advantage of an unusually warm day in PA and finished painting the front half of the frame and the exhaust manifolds.

20131117_174551.jpg

I also pulled the diff cover off of the front D44 since it was leaking after I had the jack under it. I found out that I have a Detroit True Trac up front and 4.10 gears. I would rather have a real locker and at least 4.56 gears, but with the V8 and Auto tranny the 4.10's will be fine. Glad I pulled the cover because there was a fair amount of water in the gear oil and sludge in the bottom. What kind of gear oil should I run with the True Trac?

OK...so I have been researching my gears and according to the stampings I have a 4.56 ratio. The PG stamp is for Precision Gear. According to their web site the part number for a Dana 44 with 4.56 ratio is 44D/456R. As you can see from the pic, those numbers are stamped on the ring gear. When I count the teeth on my ring gear I get 41 on the ring gear, not 50. So...either I can't count or the numbers stamped on the ring gear are wrong or I am confused. Does anyone have any input here

Judging from the gap at the firewall, the engine appears to be pretty far forward. Have you already made sure that there is adequate room left for the radiator and electric fan?

my 5.2 is probably a little further forward . i can get to the upper bell housing bolts with a ratchet from under the hood.
the one thing i had to do was flip the stock rad mount backwards and modify it slightly. my radiator is now tucked against the grill.
i put in an electric fan and i have plenty of room b/n the fan and serpentine.

let me see if i can find a pic.

i think by doing this it saved me about 1.5"-2" of room. i really don't remember what the stock setup looks like, so i can't tell you for sure.the above pic doesn't have the fan installed yet, but it fit with gobs of room.

googled it. this is the best pic i could find of a stock radiator gap from the grill.
