cobrajet94's YJ build

Finaly starting a build thread for my 1992 yj 2.5l. This is my first vehicle having it myself for almost 3 years. My dad got it in 04' drove it for a year or two and used it as a shop truck untill i got my license in 2011. Since then its changed a little.

Here's a little bit about myself. Im 19 recently graduated Lincoln tech in Connecticut for automotive mechanics. My father owns a automotive shop on long island that me and him run. Prior to starting my YJ build me and my father built a 1948 CJ2A my last two years in high school. Restored it to somewhat stock we added our touch here and there. Its sitting on 31x10.5 iroks.

Enough with the chit chat this is what you have come for:

Heres a list of things ive already done
3.5 fabtech springs
James duff front shocks
F350 front shock towers
Rough country rear shocks
Crown extended brake lines
Barnes 4wd front bumper

Whats to come next week:
Ford 9" rear 31 spline
9"front currie housing with d44 inner c's
Inner chromoly shafts
Ford d44 knuckles/brakes etc.
Detroit lockers f/r 4.86 gears
Ruff stuff y link 1 ton steering

That looks cool. Is the 9"" front going to be high pinion or low?

Brown santa brought some presents! My ruffstuff 1 ton y-link steering and the axle mounts and pinion guards from barnes 4wd came this morning

I also picked up 3rd member for the front axle from my friend for 50 bucks.

I ordered 35x12.5 goodyear mtrs they should be here in a couple days. Ill need to do some trimming to the flares so they dont rub too much

This third member has 3.50 gears and an open diff and a 1330 yoke. The other 3rd is the same but it has 1310 yoke. Im using stock shafts (1310), Luckily my dad had two yokes for a 9" laying arround. One is a 1310 and its a long yoke, hopefully it will help with my rear driveshaft being stock and short

So i started to tackle regearing and installing the lockers. So far i have gotten one third member disassembled, pinion installed and preload set.

I plan on finishing both today

Is the preload and backlash set separately on the third members? It appears they are but I have never set up gears in them.

pinion preload is the pressure on the bearings on the pinion, backlash is the amount of movement between the ring gear and the pinion gear when the pinion gear is held in place.

this is my first time setting up gears in a 9" its very simple compared to a dana 44 that I set up while I was in school.

For my first time setting up my gears and lockers id say i did good. I set the backlash to .007 and firured i needed a .015 pinion shim. Gear pattern checked out perfect! Now i need to setup the rear 3rd member.

My 35x12.5 goodyear mt/r's came in today!

I understand that. It just seems like one doesn't affect the other on the 9" unlike non third members. Seems simple enough though.

Keep up the good work.
