CJ'S YJ RE-BUild Thread

Okay just to get everyone up to date, this is my uncles jeep and we are going to revamp it somewhat to make it a more capable trail rig.The platform we are starting with is a 93 wrangler. When he originally bought the jeep the paint was thrashed, tires were flat, radiator leaking and couldnt even test drive it. He paid 1500 for it and it is a 4.0 stick shift. We had the jeep towed home and began to tear it apart and sell some of the stuff it came with to fund the project. Luckily he has a good friend that got us going in the right direction as far as lift. He purchased a BDS 3.5 and 5/8 boomerang shackles, Ground pounder fab bumpers, daystar 1' body lift, smittybilt rock sliders bushwacker flares, Bestop seats and 33/12.50/15 cooper stt on rock crawler wheels. All of this catches you up to the point where the jeep is at the moment. Now it is time for round two with some much needed changes.

here are a couple of pics from when it came home originally off the rollback

and here is the jeep as it is/was, because the tear down has begun

This is the only kind of interior shot i have at the moment, picture date is wrong

Now this particular jeep has had all of the regular jeep quirks. The transmission has been pulled out several times before being replaced, then the rear end destructed getting onto the interstate which caused the transmission to get jammed in between gears(that was one of the tranny problems). After getting that straightened out the heater core went out which was also followed by a blown head gasket. So now the jeep is finally running good and he is kind of scared to take it off the road, he wants to get some drive time lol. But i talked him into going ahead and doing the build up.

List of modifications to come very shortly
1. Winch(Installed)
2. TNT Armor (DONE)
3. Adding winch plate and stinger to bumper (DOne)
4. ARB lockers (front Done)
5. 8.8 (Done)
6. SYE and Driveshaft (done)
7. 35's (done)
this should get us going pretty good
Here are a few pics of the jeep at this moment

WIth the dana turdy five out

Now the 8.8 coming together

We should have the brake lines and calipers on and rear end back under the jeep wednesday

Okay took a little longer than originally planned, but the rear end is finally in. A little help for anyone planning to do a 8.8 swap would be to make sure you get everything with it as in calipers, e-brake shoes, and lines. When we did my swap i got it with everything but replaced it all so when we did his we figured we will not need any of that but for sure that was the hang up. For one you are going to need the calipers to turn in as cores if you get new ones and those banjo bolts for the brake lines are not that easy to find, plus we left all the bolts for the calipers and such. Anyways here are some updated pics

Got the flares off the other week and the armor will be in tomorrow

We picked up his front bumper after having a winch plate and stinger welded on, now just needs a little paint

and here are a couple of pics of the interior, he has the bestop seats and we just did a white face glow gauge install the other week which really helps out at night.

We should start tearing it down tomorrow night for the armor install

Next we mocked up the drivers side quarter overlay and mapped out where we would need to cut out the original quarter panel and drill the holes

In this picture you can see the excess quarter that needs to be trimmed to give extra clearance

Here is a pic of the trimming process

And with it cut out

We drilled all of the holes and mocked up the taillights, Surprisingly the original holes were almost dead on for the drivers side, have not got to the passenger side yet

Now all we have to do to the quarter overlay is add in a piece of metal where he originally cut off his rock slider to match up with the bushwacker flares, If it sounds complicated he cut the rock slider but rather than adding back onto it and ruining the powder coat we will add onto the quarter.

Next we moved onto the drivers side fender and tore it down

Once removed

We then stuck the new fender in place and put a few bolts in it

We will probably start off tomorrow with some trimming of the rock slider in the front. It prevents the fender from going all the way up to its factory position. I must say anyone in the market for tube fenders i think these are the best imho. This is our second set and their quality is second to none. Here is a few more pics
THis is before we adjusted the fender up in the front

Hopefully tomorrow we will button up the drivers side and get the passenger side done so we can get them ready for paint.

The garage actually just got a total make over before we started on the jeeps. About a month ago you couldn't even walk in there with out tripping over something and all the tools were on the floor. It is much nicer now with fresh paint and new lights

Started off tonight by finishing taking the tailgate off. Last night we got 3 out of 4 bolts out and broke 3 T40 torx bits before calling it. So tonight we hit it from the inside with the torch and it came right out. We did not get as much progress as we would of liked but any progress is better than none.

We got the passenger quarter mounted and drilled in place

then went back to the drivers side and made a filler for the gap from the quarter to the rock slider. It is something you could just black out in between but looks much better with the smaller gap

before

after

We also tore down the passenger fender so it will be ready to come off tomorrow
