Burn your gas, it's worth the practice. You will learn to loathe flux ! Keep practicing and you'll be confident in no time.

X3

Much easier to practice and learn puddle control when you can actually see the puddle! Flux sucks!

They already said it... but X4. Once you get the gas flowing that flux is torture. Haha.

Definitely better, I am by far an amateur welder, but I would say slow down, the fillet weld should sit more flush with the plates.

Kinda shows, but you can google a better pic.

Mess around with the settings, crank it way up so you can see what it's like, and turn it way down. How thick is your practice material? What I found that practice was cool to learn how to see the puddle and to play with the settings but just when you're able to run a nice looking bead on the bench with it sitting in front of you and you're confident...... you get under the jeep, out of position, or vertical..... and it's like you completely suck again. I would definitely practice some vertical, most of the welding you'll be doing is either vertical or over head.

I've been playing with 3/16 but I'll try all that and see what I get out of it.

looks like your heat is set to low. You want the puddle to sink into the material. What I would do is first set to a medium voltage then play with only the wirespeed. Just shoot it against the material and listen to the sound while moving the feed speed. Once it has that sizzling sound, then adjust your voltage to get the puddle to sink into the metal while looking. Then you can either move faster or slower to adjust your build up.

I feel like an idiot I forgot to change the polarity from when I was welding with flux. Explains why my welds werent really sinking in.

It should have a nice cracking sound as you weld, you don't want it to sink in the metal to a point you have what is called "undercut" this creates a weak spot that you can bet your arse it will crack.
On the other hand it should not look like a piece of rope laying against each surface, but once you have it you will know. Weave the nozzle and watch the puddle, slight clockwise roll of the wrist will help get that weld looking like a roll of dimes.
