Figured it was time to post my build here since it's been going on for almost 2 years.
It all started with a 2007 Toyota FJ Cruiser loaded that I got in 2006 when they first came out. Doing the 3" lift and 20" rims with now 35" tires, I still love that rig, BUT, it's just to wide for the tight trails here in SW Florida and I really wanted a removable soft/hard top option and a solid front axle. So I started looking for my next vehicle. I was hoping that the new FJ's would have come out with the open top after seeing that they had one at the SEMA show. But due to the bad economy not only did they not do a drop top, they cut production and threatened to stop production all together. So I started looking at jeeps, the 4 door caught my eye and I was in love! UNTIL I DROVE IT!!!! What a underpowered engine they had in them. My 1975 Ford Pinto had a more responsive power plant living in it. So the JK's were ruled out totally.
On a trip back up north to visit family I finally got the balls to stop in on a 1975 Toyota FJ40, asked the owner if he would sell it ,( I had moved originally from and had been watching this specific FJ prolly for 10 years.) I did a short test drive and made the cash deal. It was on the car hauler truck and shipping down home to Ft Myers the next morning.
So I got my removable top and solid front axle after all. The classic off roading rig needed little TLC to keep playing in the dirt so I repaired, improved and played and got use to the hard, stiff and very bouncy ride along with no AC or Power steering. After I started adding up the dollars it was gonna take to restore this to premium condition I thought maybe I should look for a newer lower milage jeep with the comfy creature comforts that I enjoy.
So, after researching "the used jeep thing" I found out that the Rubicon LJ was the real way to go for me. Rubicon options and the extended wheel base for better off roading and plenty of storage. After a month or so of stalking Craigslist hourly I saw the ad only after it was posted for 30 minutes. A realtor had it, original owner garaged and spotless. Only 21,000 miles. Never offroad and it showed that. I called and was there within the hour with cash and he came down to my offering. The rest is history and I prolly have sunk way more in upgrades than I originally paid for the vehicle, easily.
the pic's start here....... enjoy!
Purchased February 2010 this is how it came......
It's been one hell of an education building my Booty over the past 2 years. I have learned a ***** load about jeep's, suspensions, steering, navigation, winching, etc.... and thanks to all of the great people who have schooled me especially one in particular, kinda funny his initials are JP. I have met many great JEEP owners through our local and not so local clubs and events that I have participated in and visited with.
Hoping you enjoy my shots, I love photography as much as Jeepin so there's gonna be lots of them.
