bigdhamYJ's 1993 YJ Build... SLOW

So I've been all through JF and my local forums collecting plenty of ideas since the day I got my YJ. The story goes as follows (and to keep it short and sweet I'll just post some pictures that tell it all):
My old ZJ 2" BB, 235/75/15 Firestone MTs
http://i1096.photobucket.com/albums/..._7633779_n.jpg
3" skycrapper coils and extended lower control arms, 31x10.50.15" Stampede A/ts
http://i1096.photobucket.com/albums/..._7454591_n.jpg

Drove it for 2.5 Years, dearly missed.

Summer heat and wants appealed me to this...

:2thumbsup:

Straight up traded the ZJ for this, had soft top and half/soft uppers on it. Day 2, all that came off because the sun was shining!
It was love at first sight, then I realized it was nowhere near practical, but it proceeded to grown on me more and more :pickle:

Needless to say the 35x12.50x15's were TOAST and needed to be replaced.
I had a family friend who offered up an old but good tread set of the exact same tires, for $400. Needless to say, they blew out about two weeks later... Thank goodness I had my old 235/75/15s from the ZJ!
:hahaha:

As I began to yearn for mods, I realized that Pick n Pull will no longer be able to provide me with wonderous amounts of free and cheap parts because they never get YJs so needless to say, most paychecks were being held for tires. Sold my old rims and tires (the 35s) and for driveability purposes, opted for these...
33x10.50x15 KM2's! Oh and seen here is also my $150 CJ7 Hard top :cheers2:

The PO started a comp cut as some of you may be able to see, which wasn't welcomed, so I decided to cover it with...
TJ flares!

This here is mah JB4x4 RSB. Can't wait to get to that...

Enough about the Jeep, let's talk about the build.
Soon enough, 8.8 rear, keep D30 front, SOA, Boomerang Shackles, Bilsteins, dodge passenger brake lines, new leaf bushings, Cobra CB, and flex. Lots of good cheap fender stuffing flex. I have everything I need except the money and the shocks right now. Shackles will be cut and welding performed by VACJ5 who happens to live close by, and is a very helpful guy!

I've got many more pictures of the rusty old bath tub and can't wait to get her finished up, for now. It has patch panels like a mother ****** enough so to make me fred flinstone if they weren't there. Floor pans will be happening soon enough.

Cleaned it up and painted some parts the other day..

A little more update, to bring this up to date (transferring from a local forum, build has been kept up to date since day one).

The cut on the fronts... Past the marker lights :brickwall

Picked up full doors, because it was raining a lot and is now cold in VA. Man I had to fight the JY for these, and I had to piece them together with new glass and insides too... "THOSE RUSTY @$$ DOORS AREN'T WORTH $300 YA JACK@$$!!!!" :rtft:

Picked this up to start playing and learning with

Over the last few weeks, I've done some wheeling and have to say I am very pleased with the YJ as it sits. I just get tired of catching air as I commute through Norfolk, and am dissatisfied with my suspension travel, so my future mods are NECESSARY to say the least.

I keep getting antsy and excited and always find myself trying to find stuff to do on the YJ so yesterday I got out and changed the diff fluid because I knew it was leaking...
"Is it supposed to look like that?"

bigdhamYJ 11-05-2011 08:34 PM

Well today was a pretty good day. Went to my buddy's shop, VACJ5, and got my bumper mounted back up, welded on some frame tie ins, and actually connected it to the frame so that I don't snatch on the crossmember anymore...

Pics will be posted tomorrow when I can take em in the daylight!

SnowYJ 11-05-2011 11:32 PM

How do you like those 33/10.5 km2s? Been thinking about removing my bl and going from 35s to those

bigdhamYJ 11-06-2011 06:33 PM

I LOVE the 33x10.50s! They dig really good in mud but I haven't put them on rocks yet. They've been wearing really good and don't make really any road noise for a larger tire with such an aggressive tread pattern. I do however wish I would have waited and gone back to 35s. Oh and they measure to about 9.8 inches wide not quite 10.5 but I do run a 15x7 rim too. I have compared them to a few different tires and am very pleased overall!

bigdhamYJ 11-29-2011 09:57 AM

I've gotten a few little things done here lately, but I've taken a lot of pictures. I had my spring perches re-welded seeing as they were boogered up and very dangerous! That's about the biggest thing. I got my Quick disconnects to work finally! And that whole "learning to weld" thing... Well, I'm getting there. I just got the concept of drawing a bead/line rather than spattering boogers all over the place by just zapping whatever looks like a good "method."
These were the spring perch welds in the rear. They've been like that since I got it. The fronts were completely cracked, but I don't have pictures.

A very poor example of how my Harbor Freight welder and "learning" is going.

:cheers2: Another pointless update with pictures, because I can!

Picked up an ARB safari snorkel and YJ Islander Seats Saturday! Give me something to tinker with over holiday break, other than, floor pans and herculiner etc.

snorkel install in three easy pics! Haha. I guess the Jeep got pissed I cut a hole in the side of it, and my clutch finally gave out on me. A week and a half later, the YJ went under the knife. Replaced the clutch, flywheel, master cylinder, slave cylinder/throwout bearing. Boy this was fun, and one hell of a learning experience!

I can honestly say that after doing this once, and taking 4 evenings to do it, it could now be an afternoon job!
Also got floor pans, a center console, "Holy Crap" handles, and a license plate bracket for Christmas! It's going to REALLY go under the knife here soon, or the cut off wheel...

Necromancer_tat 02-05-2012 07:27 AM

Nice build so far! You should check out KMA Jeep Klub here locally in Tidewater... There are a bunch of YJ guys with some sick Jeep builds.

bigdhamYJ 02-13-2012 01:48 PM

Thanks man! I have been slowing down on the wheeling lately and have just been driving her! The YJ is actually getting lowered in a few days. Got a set of stock length boomerang shackles from VACJ5, and they'll be going on hopefully this week. I did get them painted up in preparation though! [:D] Pic for proof.

Is that a 1st gen Camaro in the garage? Why are you slowing down wheeling and lowering? Sounds like a backwards Jeep build to me..

That's a 1969 Camaro so technically second gen. That's one of my dads babies! I'll post pictures of the garage later on, needless to say its diverse... (built mustang, old Camaro, Harley etc)! The lift shackles right now are bowed and have almost no bushing left. The stock length shackles are going to lower it but I'll be going SOA eventually and swapping an 8.8 so that's when it'll get serious :D. I'm holding off on wheeling for a little bit until I get some things fixed and the way they should be first!

Necromancer_tat 02-14-2012 09:15 AM

That makes sense, I don't wheel my big Jeep right now cause I'm still building it. I'm pretty sure that first gen Camaros are 67,68,69. 2nd gen started with the 1970.

I'm the same way. I fix something and think I'm ready to wheel it and I find another reason no to. I guess I just don't understand how far you can push a jeep and moreso realize that mine can handle it. I guess that day will come eventually lolz
