Thursday morning was judgment day for Redlyner racing. We had the car prepped and ready, pit strategy planned and overall feeling good about our chances of finishing. The Mall Crawler was lined up around 7AM and took to the race course a few minutes after 8AM. The race went smooth for the first few miles; Josh and his Uncle were stationed at remote pit 1 just after mile marker 38. As far as I know it was a basic check and fuel fill up and they continued on with the race. I was helping at main pit, (mile marker 51) and the Mall Crawler pulled in maintaining around a 15th-20th position. I held the banner to notify the driver where our pit was, I then turned on my car mounted GoPro and checked the lug nuts and tire pressure. I heard the announcer with the live feed make a few comments about me checking the lugs, it was pretty cool to be on the live feed in front of thousands of people watching the race! Overall the pit stop went pretty quick as we had no known problems and the Mall Crawler continued on. Since our team was on a small budget we had to quickly pack our gear and make haste over to remote pit 2 (mile marker 79.) I was left behind at main pit because of space in the TJ. I carried the floor jack and belongings back to camp and would wait for a ride. I met up with Jay’s wife and hitched a ride up to Chocolate Thunder to wait for our team to come through. I was able to find some cell service and the other pit crew members had it covered and would pick me up before heading to the last pit station. We waited at Chocolate Thunder for a few hours and no sign of the Mall Crawler. I eventually learned that they broke the steering box mount which cause a hose to slip off and had to fix it on the trail before limping it to pit 2 and having Ruff Stuff weld up a temporary mount. I believe if we had hydro assist it would have been less stress on the steering system and wouldn't have caused it to break. Luckily we were not tied up very long with repairs and the Mall Crawler continued on. I was picked up by the pit crew after the Jeep had made it through Chocolate Thunder and we traveled over to remote pit 2A (mile marker 91.) Most of this section is difficult rocks so it took them quite awhile before we saw our team again. We made a quick visual inspection, tightened the tie rod and the Mall Crawler was on its way again. Our hopes of finishing the race were starting to increase. We made our way back to Hammertown and waited anxiously for our team to cross the finish line. The weather started to make a turn for the worse but we would not give up on our team so close to the finish line. As strong winds and rain were bearing down on us the Redlyner Mall Crawler Jeep crossed the finish line around 5:20pm with a total time of 9 hours and 9 minutes! We came in 14th place respectively in our class, and finished one of the toughest offroad races in the world!

Finished!:

Friday was the main race, where the unlimited 4400 class is allowed to showcase their talent and wallets. From IFS to solid axle to rear steer, along with 600-700hp motors and professional race teams and pit crews. I watched the start of the race and then made my way back to camp. We finished packing and cleaning the up the camper and said our goodbyes to the Callaway family as we headed off into the desert. Our first stop was at Backdoor but it had a lot of spectators already and the BLM was not allowing anyone to cross the course to find a spot. We decided to then travel out to the high speed sections and after watching a few cars we made our way over to Chocolate Thunder. Chocolate Thunder was also packed and only stayed there for a little while and made our last stop at Wrecking Ball. After staying at Wrecking Ball for a couple hours we made our back to the main stage and watched Tom Wayes in his IFS car finish the course. He however was not the winner due to missing a checkpoint; Loren Healy was crowned champ and King of the Hammers. We decided to call it a day and headed back to our Jeep and left Johnson Valley until next year. It was an experience I will never forget!

Nice write-up and great pics. This was the first year I have missed since 2010 so I was a little bummed, but after seeing the superb coverage U4 had live and seeing how cold it was I was not as sad as I sat in my warm shop watching the action. It is really different out there, though. So open and no trees to dodge.

Zach the weather was not bad at all. 60s during the day and a little chilly at night but nothing extreme. No trees just dry rocks and dust, nothing like we have back here at home. That and free public land.

I will be happy to go again next year! Hopefully with my own rig and some one ton axles with it! Maybe a beater rock bouncer too?

I wouldn't mind a job at an offroad magazine either...make sure to read the first half on the page before too!

he did not upgrade the wiring, simply swapped in the alternator

Sorry it took a while to get an answer for you

No problem. The Jeep is still sitting (and now buried under a bunch of snow.) I talked with my parts guy and for $370 I will just replace it with a local autoparts store unit.

Haha, with my terrible parking spots. I was grateful I've been going to the gym a lot lately. And I was still dying.

Parking wasn't that bad, good workout getting back to the Jeep on CT, my legs were already dead from the race

In order to have any chance of making some wheeling trips this year, I need to sell some of my vehicles and extra parts lying around...

Is anyone interested in my M416 military trailer? It is not officially for sale yet but if your interested let me know!

I can't believe it has been over a month since KOH! With the weather warming up here at home I am ready to get the Jeep in the garage and fixed up for wheeling this year. The jeep will be getting refined for competition, I'm not ready to release all the secrets just yet.

I copied my list from a few pages back and did a quick revision for 2014 wheeling.

1. Truck and Trailer - Got the truck now to find the trailer!
2. HP30- Savvy Tie Rod, Flip Kit, Spare U-Joints, Diff Rebuild, Catch Can
3. 32RH- Deep Pan, Temp Gauge
4. NP231- Cable Shifter, Seperate Crossmember?
5. Frame Nutserts / Control Arm Mounts
6. Ford 8.8- Repair ARB Locker, Catch Can
7. Reinforce Tire Carrier
8. AtoZ Fabrication Weld on Beadlocks
9. Electrical- Switch Panel, Rock Lights, Fuse Block, Tow Wiring, Tail Light, etc. Not as important but Seat Heaters, Audio Equipment, and CJ style turn signals as well.
10. Exhaust / Drivetrain Vibrations
11. Interior - Console Rattle, Remount Harnessess
12. Replace Alternator / CGL
