The Story:
Well, here we go again. I had an '02 WJ until last March, as some of y'all may know. I decided that paying over $19,000 wasn't going to work for me, so I told my brother to take it back so I could build my own credit for a change (it was his all along). So I was scouring Auto Trader, Craigslist, and eBay looking for a Comanche, Cherokee, or possibly even a Wrangler. Lo and behold, I come across this modest pile of Jeep... No rust, 143K on the ticker, and the ever popular 2-Door 5-Speed combination everyone talks about.

I talked to the folks at the local bank, and $2500 later it was mine all mine.

The Timeline:
The first thing I did was replaced a few essentials... Serpentine belt, power steering fluid, engine oil, transmission gear oil, and last but certainly not least...

Get that blankity-blank thing off my engine!!!

Following that was a move across town with my brother. The new place has, among other improvements over mom and dad's, a garage. Of course, suddenly paying rent makes for a dull and slow Jeep build. Still managed quite a bit.

Summit wires, cap, and rotor:

And some Autolite single Platinums (wanted Coppers, but Platinums were on sale). I was faced with no choice but to facepalm when I pulled the first one of these out of the head:

Looked up the part number and they weren't even the right ones for the 4.0! So I have gimmick spark plugs for the wrong engine...What was who smoking???

Along came a piece of scrap steel. I made an antenner mount for my old Firestik. Plopped it right there on the rear bumper:

The antenna stood right in the way of the rear hatch...Measuring (or should I say thinking) was never really my strong suit, anyway.

So I picked up a foldy-downy-thingy from the truck stop...

That worked out well until I got tired of the antenna being there, since I didn't have a radio anyway.

Next modification was a pair of trapezoidal beam farm implement lights from Farm & Fleet. They're actually the same lights I had on the roof of the WJ. I wired them through a relay in conjunction with the stock fog light power source. That way they shut off with the parking lights even if the switch is in the on position.

Then I decided to finally slap my old CB in. Just couldn't find a good place to put it. Dash is too small, airbags to consider...HATE the look of a CB on the passenger's side of the console... What to do?

Between the sun visors!

Next thing to upgrade was the choonz. Speakers were pretty important...but in retrospect, not THIS important. Observe:

Yeah, the new ones are substantially bigger...Now we mix OCD and a jigsaw:

Cut it up like a boss. (Admit it...you think your boss is an idiot sometimes.)

A few weeks later, I took off the air dam and trimmed the jugs:

The next three mods were done in preparation for the 21st annual Jeep Jamboree in French Lick, IN.

First was the Rugged Ridge tow hooks up front...

Then was the Class III Hidden Hitch I bought off a friend who had just bought his '91 Cherokee.

Finally I rummaged around mom and dad's yard to find this old steelie from my mom's '87 Diplomat. Same bolt pattern as the XJ. Full size spare is required for the Jamboree...

Hitch Cover

Made a mini-project randomly one night. I wanted a cool hitch cover and didn't feel like paying out the you-know-what for one. Found a cheap chrome hitch cover at Meijer for $4.99. Decided to make my own design on it.

At this point I decided what to make it. Nothing too complicated, but not too simple. I wanted a challenge. So I decided on a paw print, since I like dogs and wolves. I masked the whole thing, drew the paw print, cut it out with a razor blade, scuffed it with steel wool, painted with Krylon Fusion, peeled the tape, and clear coated. What's unique about mine is that unlike all commercially manufactured ones, mine actually has claw marks, which are unique to canine prints.

And of course tires...

As can be seen from the last pic posted...I got a new set of tires right before the Jamboree. I wanted Firestone Destination A/T's. Those were on backorder. So I tried for Dayton Timberline AT II's. Those were on backorder. So I tried for Yokohama Geolandar A/T-S. Those were on backorder.

Doesn't anyone make freakin' tires anymore?

So the dude at Discount Tire suggested a Good Year spinoff called Pathfinder. I looked them up and basically they are pretending to be BFGoodrich A/T KO's. Couldn't find jack on them from Jeep guys. Fortunately I have no pride and found myself lurking around Yota Tech reading a lot of good things about them.

So here they are:

And one of the old Coopers made a good full size spare:

Why thank you.

Here's how it sat a couple days before the Jamboree...

While at the Jamboree, something happened that would change the course of this Jeep's life...

This was my second year at the French Lick Jeep Jamboree. While at the 20th annual Jamboree last year, it was raining all day during tech inspection. I ended up hanging out in the inspection barn and spent most of the time talking to one of the trail guides who goes by the handle Tree Hugger. He was leading the Willy's Flatfender group that year, but introduced me to my trail guides; Neal, Angie, and Twiggy.

Well, this year Tree Hugger was an Orange group trail guide. That worked out for me, because I knew all of my guides from last year. Partway through the second trail the battery in his flatty died and he ended up riding out with me, since I was in the middle of the group. He had a lot to say about Cherokees, and told me about the one he used to wheel.

On the second day, he made me an offer for some XJ parts that he had in his garage. All I had to do was come pick them up. How could I refuse?

It was at this time I had made up my mind and decided once and for all that this was going to be the Arctic Wolf. Mostly 'cause it's white and I like wolves. Anyway, coming soon to a theater near you: Fender flares and grille get painted white and House of Grafx sends me a little something-something for my fenders. Also, pics of the skids and an unexpected bonus from Tree Hugger. Stay tuned...

Okay, so when I got back from the Jamboree I had some cleaning up to do. Not like last year where it looked like I had just driven out of the Hudson River. This time it was all dust, so it only took a couple hours...

I also accumulated some trail damage while out on the rocks:

And my CB antenna got positively smoked on an embankment:

I had to tell pretty much everyone I'm not worried about the damage. Makes for good stories and great memories.

Making a white Jeep whiter...

A couple days after the Jamboree I decided it was high time to take care of making my Arctic Wolf look more like an arctic wolf. First thing to go was the black grille...

...followed by the grey flares.

Rears done:

I was extremely unhappy with the result, because the Krylon Fusion I used was about 6 shades too light. I looked up the paint code, PW1 (Stone White) and looked around for some DupliColor. Not a darn place had it. I ended up sourcing some PPG from a local auto body supplier.
