I am new here and just bought my first jeep wrangler. Its a 1997 SE 2.5 L 5 speed manual. I got it for $400.00, it runs and drives but needs work

A little about my jeep

1997 wrangler TJ
2.5 liter
5 speed manual
Stock diffs
Currently running 265/75/15 goodyears (30.5)

Goals include:
- get it back to a good running condition
- replace all worn parts
- fix rust issues
- regear front and rear diff to 4.88
- upgrade to 33's
- 2-4 inch lift
- instal tube style fenders
- upgrade sway bar (not sure on what I'm doing yet)

Right now I'm in stage 1 of my jeep build and that's getting it back to a safe reliable condition.

You'll have better luck hosting pictures from Photobucket or another site like it. Nice deal on the jeep btw

It needs work tho. The drivers floor board is rusted through and only the drivers front caliper works but it starts and drives. First of many projects is replacing all brake lines and hoses, and calipers, rotors , pads and tires. I am in need of a soft top. Any suggestions would be great

A lot of that stuff depends on what you would like to do with your jeep? A you looking for a mild to moderately built daily driven offroader, or a more hard core rig? figuring that out now will save you lots of time and money in the long run. Brake wise, I use black magic brake pads on centric rotors. Its the best brake performance you can have on stock brake hardware, IMO. I will look into those. I'm wanting it to be a dd and once in a while doing a bit of off road. Everyone is telling me to get rid of it to get the wrangler with the 4.0 but I got this one at such a steal. Is it possible to off road the 2.5? Without issues

Its going to be a slow build. One thing at a time. The two body mounts are rusted bad as well. Right now I'm searching for the stock 15 inch rims. It has ford ranger 16 inch alloys on it right now

It is completely possible to offroad with a 2.5l . Look at MO2500's build thread, he up until recently had the 4cyl.

My plan for this jeep is to keep it simple and get everything up to date: the fluids, brakes, shocks, tires, and a tune up. Basically getting it road ready and safe again. This jeep sat for the last two years with out moving. I found this jeep at a yard sale. The original owners were going to have it towed up to the scrap yard. They used the jeep to tow it behind their RV across America. It is rusty but we jumped started it and it ran. I have now put on 60 miles on it since a week ago when I got it. Today I was working when a guy came in to install aftermarket rims on his 2001 wrangler. I was able to purchase his factory rims. The tires that were on there are in pretty decent shape but im still going to get some new tires in a couple weeks. Im not going to lift it or put big tires on till Everything else is in good shape. The two body mounts are rusted out and the drivers floor board has a big hole in it so I will be ordering a new torque channel to fix the body mounts and welding in a new floor. I'm hoping that aver the next six months it will be ready to start doing upgrades.
