With a properly working switch the vacuum will switch to the other line on the diff disconnect. Hope this helps.
Found this bit of information. Sounds similar to what is happening with mine. The vacuum never switches lines. The only difference is when I unplug that line it does switch to 4 WD?

I did a double check on the transmission. Looks like I am one of the lucky ones that got a pre 90's YJ with an AX-15! I verified it from the VIN number and the identifying traits of the AX-15. Mainly the 1 inch thick plate joining front half and rear half and NOT split from front to rear with seam running along the bottom.

The advance adapters SYE showed up. The little gold piece is not part of it, it is the vacuum switch for the transfer case, hopefully that is what the problem with my 4WD is.

I put in the SYE today. I had a lot of fun doing it and learned a TON! I read some posts on other people doing it and I don't know how people did it in under four hours. It took me about 6 hours to get the entire thing done. If you are thinking about doing this, do yourself a favor and take the transfer case out. It is only a few more bolts to take out and it will make life a lot easier. I intended on taking more pics but I was always so dang greasy that it made it tough, so my apologies for the lack of pictures. I owe my best friends dad a huge THANK YOU because he walked me through the procedure and let me use their shop and tools. We even put all the parts in the parts washer!

You can see here that I took out the transfer case drop since it is not really needed anymore and since the rear axle pumpkin is going to have to be tilted no matter what I figured it would be best to remove the t-case drop. The axle shouldn't need to much more of a tilt, I have to call Rusty's and let them know what length drive shaft I need on Monday, so while I wait I will work on taking care of the pumpkin angle.

So the four wheel drive still isn't working. I thought for sure that when I replaced the switch on the top of the transfer case that would solve the problem. No such luck. The old switches ball detent was even stuck so I really thought the replacement switch would make the difference. Very lost and confused on this 4WD problem???

Ordered the drive shaft on Monday, hopefully it will get here by the end of the week or early next week.

If anyone needs transfer case parts for an NP231 I have the old parts that I replaced when I installed the SYE. I also have the old drive shaft. Probably needs a new slip yoke, but good other than that. Will offer good price for any of the parts.

I ordered my drive shaft from Rusty's off road over two weeks ago and still have not received it. Every time I call no one can give me an expected arrival date. I hope that they can get it figured out soon because I sure would like to have a rear drive shaft for my Jeep.

Off topic, but where are you at in Montana. I grew up in the Whitefish area, about 10 miles out of town on KM-Ranch Road. Have you been to the Missouri Breaks Area for Jeepin'?

Love your Jeep and what you are doing. Started a new forum for myself. PM me if interested.

Thank you,

Robert

So I just ordered a spare tire carrier from TnT customs.

Tnt Customs Rear Tire Carrier

I went with this one for my own sanity. I was going to go with one of the rear bumper swing away ones but the bolts in my bumper are absolutely stuck. I even broke one of the bolt heads off trying to take them out. I found this one and I really liked it also so that is what I went with. They even gave me a discount since I am a returning customer. I even thought about building a mount for it in the back where the back seat use to be but I decided it would be nice to have that space for tools and supplies.

I have most of the stereo equipment ready to go in I am just waiting on the amp. It is a brand new amp from Rockford Fosgate. It is either 300 or 350 amps (I can't remember for some reason) and it is the size of a CD case! Should be awesome for mounting it so it doesn't get wet. I will post some pictures of the speakers and deck in the next couple of days.

I am in Great Falls right now. I went to college in Bozeman and just graduated in 2010. I haven't been out Jeepin' yet. The Jeep has been in pieces ever since I bout it about a year and a half ago so I finally got it running and I am in the process of working out the kinks right now. But soon I hope to hit the trails!
