'89 Comanche - "The Garbage Can"
My brother and I went and bought a 1989 comanche today. We found it on craigslist for 900 and when we called, the owner lowered it to 400 because there was a short and the engine stopped working. My brother and I plan to get it running, and fix the body first then go from there. We call it the garbage can because the owner pretty much made it his garbage can. Anything and everything you could think of was in that jeep when my brother and I were cleaning it out today and the name has stuck. We plan on taking a lot better care of it than the previous owner did. This is a long project but we plan on putting in our effort to make it very clean and factory while adding top quality parts. Here are some pictures of when we brought it home.

This is what it looked like cleaned up. We got most of the trash and dirt out. Still working on it..

The tailgate was jammed when we got it so my brother took a crowbar and worked at it a little. We eventually opened it up.. bent down the sides that were causing the problem, used a bunch of PB blaster and WD-40 and now it works like a charm going up and down. We will still probably replace it but at least it works for now.

Well, worked on figuring out what is wrong with it today. Didn't get much progress at all. We ran the battery up to autozone and it checks out.. We are running our options but odds are if we can't figure it out after awhile, we will put a 350 in it. But for now we are going to start working on the body. We are going to the junkyard this weekend to get some parts.

Me either!

My brother and I have some ideas on why the engine might not be working so we will try it tonight.

Gearhead231 09-01-2011 08:24 PM

I told him you guys should do the 2001 cherokee front end and dash swap. I sent him a link of this guy who did a beautiful job on his.

So we just got it running today. Turns out it was a fusible link to the the ignition switch that blew. Runs a little rough but not to bad for 215k on the engine. Turned out to be a 30 dollar fix which is great considering the guy knocked 500 dollars off the price just because it wasn't running. :2thumbsup:

Alright it's been awhile since a post. It has been at the shop just waiting for my brother to get the time to fix the brackets for the doors then once that happens, we will bring it home and start to work on replacing the interior and body panels and in the long plan, replace or rebuild the engine.

Just now, my brother recently bought 33's for his XJ and put his old 31's on the comanche. It looks good already.

Gotta agree, the wheels and tires make a it look bad ***. Any plans for paint in the ner afeature?

Also great job on your TJ too man.

Thanks, yeah we are still tossing the idea around with paint. Between my brother and I we can't decide on a precise color. But probably going to prep it ourselves and take it to Maaco when we choose a color.

The time now is 11:49 AM.
