590nm Jeep TJ Build+Life
Hey everyone. This is the build thread for my 2004 Jeep TJ.
If you're wondering about the title, it's because 590nm is the wavelength of yellow light ;)

I can summarize my Jeep simply.
It's not really good at anything, but mediocre at many things.
It has poor road compliance (solid axles front & rear), it's loud, gets poor fuel economy.
But it makes up for it by being decent offroad, and fun in the winter (RWD + 5-speed + snow = oversteer).
I seem to be able to fit anything I want in the back cargo area.
It also can pull a small trailer, and has pulled many cars via tow straps.
I've even pushed parts cars/project cars around with my front bumper. How many vehicles can do that without damage?

13/06/15 Update
- I fixed some of the pictures after I recovered the images from

The rest of this first post is pretty much original from the thread creation in Sept 2008.

I'll start by listing my current modifications, (both big and very small) and then show you the changes my jeep has gone through in the 16 months i've had it.

I'd just like to note, that everything done to the jeep was done by myself, sometimes with the help of a few friends. All right in my own driveway.

Back Story:
Ever since I was a little kid, i've wanted to go
off the beaten path. Somewhere along the way, I learned of the greatness that is Jeep, and right then I knew i'd eventually have one.
Over two years ago, I started the long hunt for my jeep. I knew I wanted a yellow one, with the 4.0 and 5 speed. After some research i started looking for one with a D44 rear end and 3.73 gearing. You'd be surprised at the lack of selection around here when it comes to jeeps, so I had to settle for the D35 rear end, but all my other criteria were pretty much met.

--Rig specs at time of purchase (May 9th 2007)--
  • Solar Yellow w/dual tops
  • 4.0L I6 w/NV3550
  • D30/D35 with 3.73 Gears
  • 7 Speaker stereo, A/C.
  • 76K Kms. (47K Mi.)

Now i'm not totally sure when the mod bug bit me, but i'd say pretty much right after I got the jeep. I placed an order with quadratec for a bunch of small, mostly interior things.
Somewhere in there, I made a thread asking how to take the very stuck doors off () and went for my first drive doorless. Shortly after that, I finally got the hardtop off, and the soft top down.

Also got some flat end caps from the dealer, and did some poser flexing after disco'ing the swaybar.

The jeep stayed pretty much stock for more then an entire year, while I gathered parts up in the basement, and waited until next spring to start the installs (Except for some free/cheap mods like rollbar padding removal, and spare tire removal in preparation for a new rear bumper) (Pictures: April 17/08)

Until finally some mods started.
May 15/08 - 1.25" JKS Body lift

May 16/08 - M.O.R.E. 1" Bombproof motor mount lift

May 28th and 29th 2008 - Got some mild trail wheeling in, and took some poser flex pictures.

Now comes the fun part. In the space of about a week, after my final highschool exams, and before my camping trip, myself and some friends went crazy on the jeep. I ran out of time, so I had all the painting done at a shop, but I was just going to rattlecan everything.
  • Four 31"x10.50 Cooper ATR tires (GSAs were BALD and I needed tires before camping)
  • Nate's 4x4 front and rear bumpers
  • Hella 500 and Hella 1000 lighting with custom 12ga harnesses and switching
  • Colormatched Half doors, rollbars, and shackles

It turned out that my friend's boat broke, so we ended up wheeling every day for an entire week.

We didn't stop often to take pics or vids outside of the jeep, there were bugs everywhere! However I do have some great footage on my YouTube account.

...Camping Continued
On the very last day before we left to go home, we got stuck. My first stuck.
I took a line too far to the left where the trail had washed out.
Yes we were wheeling alone, but we were taking it pretty easy, being hundreds of miles from home and everything. Luckily my friend's buddy came and gave us a tug with an ATV.

We got back to camp and stripped most of the interior out, and hosed it off.
We got home uneventfully, and I washed out at least a few pounds of mud from under the jeep. ;)

During August, I mostly just drove around top and doors off.

Panici 09-30-2008 02:59 PM

Over a few days at the end of august, a friend and myself completed a 2" Rubicon Express Budget Boost, and then got some flexing in during september.

Towards the end of september, I got some maintance done, as well as a few misc mods.

Took the windshield down, enjoying the weather.

I've had five 33x12.50 Cooper STTs waiting in the tire shop for almost 8 weeks now, waiting on my five Eagle Alloy 187s to arrive off of backorder.

My life.

Custom 3rd brakelight (14 red LEDs) / 55w reverse light / worklight (Oct 28/08)

Today, I finished wiring my rear fog/backup light/3rd brake light :)
It's wired with a 3-position switch in my 10-mini switch panel, that allows me to turn the 55w light on manually, or have it come on automatically with the reverse lights, or disable it completely.

Sorry about the crappy cell phone pictures, i'll take some better ones tomorrow.

Photoshop ;)
I placed the camera on a flat surface and took two pictures.
One with the hood closed, and one with it open, trying not to move the camera between the shots.
