Well to be honest I have never had an issue. In the WJ I had a limited slip up front and an Aussie locker in back and this jeep has been lock rights/Spartans and now full Detroit's. I haven't had the pleasure of driving in the snow with Detroit's yet and I'm betting they will be more noticeable, but the other lockers have been fine. I have never had any problems and even have been able to pull people out of ditches and stuff. Maybe I'm just accustomed to snow driving but as long as you plan ahead, snow is easy.

1.Is it true you need to let of the gas on turns for auto-lockers, and that they only engage with acceleration? Because if that were the case, my Jeep would probably go EXTREMELY slow.
2. How is driving the Jeep on windy(wine-dee) roads? Can you still gas into and out of turns?
3. How bout roads in the rain?

Well the entire job of the locker is to lock. So of coarse it is going to do its job when ever the conditions allow/require it too.

So the difference with open and autolocker in a turn.

With an open dif, the power goes to the outside tire or the tire turning the fastest. The power of the vehicle goes to the point of least resistance. That's why open difs spin a tire in the mud or the air.

An auto locker is the opposite. The locker will not let a tire turn slower then the power coming in. So when you are going around a turn with an auto locker, you are essentially powering the inside tire. The locker is "allowing" the outside tire to turn faster then the tire receiving power. If you apply torque and there is enough to spin your tires, it will spin the inside tire.

So to answer your questions
1. No you do not have to let off the gas in a turn. You just have to remember that you are powering the inside tire. If you put power to the ground you are going to spin that inside tire and that is where you could spin out or loose control. I have never had an issue. It is very easy to chirp the inside tire whenever I want tho.

2.windy roads are great. You can apply as much power as you want, just Keeping in mind that at lower speeds its easy to spin the inside tire.

3. Wet/slick roads are easier to spin your tires just like in any other vehicle.

It did, thank you very much. Given that I have a Dana 30 front, and a Dana 44 rear, if I had to choose between getting a front auto locker and a rear one, what would be better?

It really comes down to the type of wheeling you do (rock/dirt/mud) and if you plan to drive in 4wd on the pavement.

Just 4wd on the pavement the few times I decide to go up to snowboard and there's snow or ice on the road.

Also, do Detroits wear down the surrounding components in the axles and the drivetrain components due to the torque actions in the locker of constant daily driving? As well as wearing down tires faster?

The lockers themselves...do they wear out from daily driving?

Well I'm sure any parts in a vehicle will wear from use, but the Detroit's have a reputation of withstanding the test of time. They will wear your tires faster if you drive aggressively


If you plan on driving in 4wd on the road, then I would not put an auto locker in the front. You can't really turn on dry/wet pavement with an autolocker.

Plus the d44 locker will be able to hold up to some more bashing then the d30.

nice LJ! Your fenders and corner armor look great since you powdercoated them. Deep down I was hoping you were going to body match your front fenders but they still look good

Thanks! I will body match the entire jeep soon enough! I just wanted to get them coated so I can work on all the other projects this jeep needed.. Plus the Powdercoating was a steal at <80$
