2012 JKU Sahara Project

Well, I figured it was time to see what I can accomplish with this 2012 JKU Sahara. I have read on this forum, along with other forums, that the Sahara isn't an ideal platform to build a great wheeler. I am about to prove that a ficticious rumor.

The specs:

2012 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Sahara in black, leather, 430N system, etc..
Build date February 5 2012
Took delivery 26 February 2012 w/ 9 miles

The goal: A daily driver capable of conquering moderate to somewhat difficult trails without sacrificing ride quality.

Budget: $15,000 (for now)

Parts ordered on March 13 2012:
Rubicon Express 3.5" Long Arm system
Rubicon Express front drive shaft/flange
Bilstein 5160 Reservoir shocks
Nitto Trail Grappler 35x12.50 17 (x5)
MHT Fuel Hostage wheels black 17x9 4.5 offset (x5)
Hanson Rear bumper w/square tube tire carrier
Boom Mat headliner

On list for next order:
Hanson 60" winch guard front bumper w/aluminum skid, winch plate
Warn 9.5 CTI-S winch
Lightforce 170 Styker lights (used them in Iraq, awesome lights and company) or Rigid Industries LED D2's

Future Mods:
JKS Sector Shaft brace
Re-gear to 4.88's pending ride outcome
Dana 60's (Rock Jock?) w/lockers
Poison Spyder Trail Cage
Poison Spyder crusher flares/corner armor/LED taillights

Once the items arrive build will commence. I will update each addition with pics. To be continued soon...

Installed the first thing to arrive so far, the Boom Mat headliner. Installation was a breeze. Started by laying out the mat pieces to ensure all were there. Next I prepped the surface of my hardtop with Isopropyl Alchohol. Just a quick go over with a clean alchohol saturated rag in between the grooves and on all the flat areas that will be covered. I then did a test fit to see where all the pieces will go. Note that there are small foam pieces that will be placed in the grooves of the top, that way when the large mats are placed, there won't be any lumps, or ridges.

I did the front Freedom panels first, since they were the smallest. The instructions recommend using a roller, but I just used my hands to push on the pieces so they stick well. The product is nice and thick. Adhesive on the mats is strong, and should hold well. I did this while the top was fairly warm from the sun. Instructions say to let it stick with the top upside down, for 25 minutes at least. They also show two people removing all the Freedom Top pieces to flip them and place them on the ground. I did this with the top on and by myself in 1.5 hours. You will need to loosen the rear top so you can prop it up 6 inches or so to get the middle piece lined up and attached, since the speaker bar is in the way, and makes a tight fit.

I am truly impressed with the drop in road noise at highway speed, and also, how much quieter the cabin is. I also noticed it wasn't as warm inside my JKU with the sun beating down on the black top all day today. This will be good once the temps really get up there. Not sure if there was a vast improvement in the sound quality from the music coming out of my speakers, but I am sure Boom Mat does help with the acoustics inside the cab when your cranking your music. It is also great on the eyes and matched my black leather interior better than the plain white hardtop. I recommend this product immensely!

So the work has begun now that the suspension components have all arrived. Packaging looks great from Rubicon Express. Everything was secure and padded. The first thing done was the front end, and then the rear. As I upload these pics, the rear is nearing completion. Just some last minute welding on some brackets, and then the assembly of the control arms. The Nitto Trail Grapplers will be mounted to the Fuel Hostage wheels tomorrow, then mounted to my JKU. Then come Monday, next stop will be alignment. Hopefully my Hanson rear bumper assembly is here by next week so I can mount my matching spare and Hi Lift jack.

Oh, I forgot to mention I received my billet black antenna from AntennaX.com. This will be going on after my JKU is off the lift. Thanks AntennaX! It will look great!

Slick Rick! Building my 12 as well. You'll love the Trails. Bout to ditch my 35" Duratracs and do 37" Trails. I miss those tires. I sell that tire as well as the Toyo MT to 80% of our customers. Put 55k on my 35s on my 1500 Hemi. I'll be watching!!

Nice! I wanted 37's and 4.5" of lift, but this will be my daily driver and trail rig, so I figured 35's would suffice. I may switch at a later date. I heard the Trail Grapplers lasted pretty long for the design, handled well, plus they look great. I will have to check out your build thread. Thanks for watching!

Here are a couple of pictures of the suspension and wheels/tires mounted. Rides like a dream! Extremely happy with the outcome. I should have my Hanson rear bumper and tire carrier by the end of this week. Hanson front bumper/skid by next week. Once the suspension is broken in, I will take it on some trails to see the full articulation of this baby!
