Marhey's 2011 JKU Build

Hi All! I decided its time to start a build thread as my project is getting close to a point where it is presentable. I bought a 2011 JKU in the late fall of 2012. It was bone stock with higher mileage because the previous owner commuted on the interstate almost an hour each way every day.

This is as it sits currently:

As purchased:

Within days of purchasing it, I dropped it off for a 4" Zone lift, 37" toyos, and XD wheels. AKA: the budget "look good" set up. I fully acknowledge I had absolutely no idea what I was doing with this rig. I guess I learned through trial and error.

Its hard for me to remember what I did next but to sum up a few things, I got a Trektop NX, Teraflex rock sliders, Teraflex HD spare tire carrier. I trimmed my fenders. I swapped my Zone shocks for Teraflex 9550s. I installed quick disconnects for the front sway bar. I drove around like that for quite a while. I did a little wheelin' at local spots with my 37"s, stock D30 & D44 on 3.73 gears. This thing had no guts whatsoever.

I got some shorty caps for my stock bumper:

Here are some shots of the TF Sliders. I HATE nutserts!!

Then I picked up a Rancho rear traingulated 3-link:

But it doesn't fit with the 55-gal muffler these minivans have so, bye bye stock exhaust...

Turns out I won't be able to install the rear suspension for a while though.

Now on to the axles... I have had a mechanic buddy on the lookout for Rubicon axles for quite a while. We were able to get a hold of a Rubi rear end with 5.13 gears already installed but it turned out the shaft splines were slights tweaked, but still drive-able. So, we installed it in the rear and I just removed my front driveshaft for the time being:

Two weeks later I installed chromoly shafts.

Front axle:

The front axle is close. I found a deal for an empty TF HD44 housing, so I picked that up and ordered gears and a stock locker. I really want RCVs so I found some stock shafts to get me by until then.

This is the difference between Rubi D44 front and a TF HD44 front.

If I was reading this I would ask, "Why didn't he just buy a PR44..." or something like that. Well, all of the parts I found were through hook-ups or searching online. I am into the rear axle less than $1500 plus my stock rear D44 (which went to the seller of the Rubi Rear D44)! And the front, about $2700 plus I have my stock axle to sell. Keep in mind, ALL the parts in the front are new except the shafts, which will be replaced with RCVs eventually. $4000ish to go from stock D30 & D44, to a Teraflex HD44 and Rubi D44, locked and geared to 5.13 with Chrom rear shafts seems like a good deal to me. Especially when stock lockers at $1800 each from Jeep. (I guess I'm practicing my justification speech when the wive asks...) haha...

I looked into everything, just waited for the right deal. If I get a 60, it'll be for the rear to replace the Rubi D44. I haven't been wheeling in a while because I didn't trust my stock axles, so there's a trade off. I decided to save money and go without wheeling while I looked for the right deals rather than take another mortgage on my home to buy parts off the shelves.

I received the locker for the front axle yesterday. Hopefully, I should be able to get the front axle in next weekend.

Is the terflex axle shorter than the stock rubi axle or is it just the picture?

Awesome looking rig man. You got some pennies tied up in that!

Same length, just the angle of the photo makes it look shorter.

Just a minor update, but I painted the inside of my freedom panels (what a dumb name for those)...

Picked up a new rear driveshaft. And the Metalcloak front track bar is shown. I love new parts.
