2000 TJ build

Got my TJ in 08 from a dealer in boone. Shes a 2000 TJ, 4.0 HO, NV 3550, NP 231, D30/35. Currently on 31's with no lift. At one time it had a 4" lift and 33's but I went smaller with my last round of tires and took the lift off. Been to uwharrie a few times, brown mountain once and just general offroading here and there. Since I got her ive done all the work on her myself with some help from my previous roommate (biggn231 on here).

Last month the clutch died out. While putting on a new one we realized that there was a significant rust issue going on in the frame. The outside looks decent but the inside is rotting away. The drivers is bad but the passengers side is worse. Where the front lower control arm on the pass side connects to the frame there is a spot rusted through on both sides and all around that area is rotted bad on the inside. Looks like ill need a frame soon.

Anyway Ive had this jeep for a few years now and never started a thread on it, well I never really did anything significant but I think its time to put some time and money into it, so I thought id start a thread to document progress.

future plans:
new/rebuild frame
I would loooooove to do a TJ6 conversion
clayton LA front and rear
3.5-4" lift
upgraded axles
35's
rockers, other armor
tummy tuck

rust issues. I recently painted the frame rails but there was a bit more surface rust on them. While taking the trans pan down to replace the clutch we stripped/broke/cut all of the 6 bolts holding it up. when we got the pan off we realized that the area the nutserts go into was rotted away so we welded nuts to some metal plate and welded that to the bottom of the frame rails.

Today i picked up my durango steering box and put it in. My stock box leaked like a waterfall and everytime we were out wheeling i would get the "bumblebees" buzzing under the hood. I eventually want to be on 35's so i figured id go ahead and do the upgrade.

i put the puller on, tightened it up and smacked the arm with a hammer a few times. Pitman arm came right off.

after that i decided to move into the interior. my blower motor control switch gave out last week which made for some cold morning rides to work so i decided to fix that.



helpful hint if you do this. once you get the control box off the dash take the black and white pieces apart. the way the switches sit in the back makes it hard to get them in and out without taking the face off the front.


i also noticed that this was burnt up a little. not sure what from but didnt look too bad so im not gonna worry about it quite yet.


got all that back together and then it was off to the next thing.

picked up a set of cut fenders not too long ago for free from a guy in town. decided to work on them a bit and get them ready to go on.


he had a snorkel on his tj so ill have to weld a piece in to fill in the hole.

didnt get alot of pics of it but i went to lowes and got a 10' piece of 3/4" conduit to put around the edge of the fender. its only there to add a little strength and to give the look of a tube fender. I bent a 90 degree in it, measured it out and got it cut to fit in. then i started prepping the fender for welding. it got dark and we went out to eat so i had to stop but hopefully tomorrow ill finish both fenders.



the 3/4" conduit fits snug in this little hole in the back

another issue that ill have to work on soon is my rear hatch. the lower hinge has gone bad and the hatch droops and is a PITA to close. i took the tire off so its not as bad now but it still needs to get fixed. the plan is to get the hinge pin out and replace the bushing inside and replace pin with a grade 8 bolt. might start that tomorrow too.

you can see that the bushing is so bad that the rear part of the hinge has dug out the back of the hinge.

thats the plan on the fenders. and ive looked at all those things but with it rotting from the inside out i dont know how long they would last. i got a message today about a guy who has a whole new frame that has never been under a vehicle for sale for $800 so im thinkin ill go get that and swap it in. if i went safety cap i would have to get these which are more then $800 plus they dont go far enough forward to replace the rusted area on mine.

Ya 800 for a rust free frame sounds like a good deal to me. Not that I know what there worth but with a little sweat equity how can you lose. Love the green she deserves it.

talked to the dealer the other day. he said they cant even get the frames anymore but when they could they were $3500. I have always loved the dark green but I loooooove the geko green on the jk's. i dont think it would look good on the tj but ive debated color changing to a dark orange.
