Turns out that Jeep didn't put transmission coolers on any of the 98 Jeeps, even if it has the towing package. Jeep, for some reason, didn't think it needed it. The odd part is, that the part numbers for all of the cooler lines and all, are in the 98 zj parts catalog. Odd...

As far as getting her going, she needs:
  • Torque Convertor
  • Tranny Rebuild
  • Overdrive Rebuild
  • Rear Axle Shafts
  • Finish setting up the D44a
  • PCV Valve/Grommet @ valve cover
  • Install new CV Boots

Pics and videos. Got the tow hooks installed. The GOR is not broken in any place, which is surprising. Notice the nice sounds of the main overdrive bearing.

Da video.

Only cooler involved is the one on the side of the radiator, probably why the lines are available.

After you rebuild the tranny, make sure you install the biggest GVW plate-style cooler that you can afford. I had a 30k GVW cooler on my old 5.9. Make sure that you eliminate the check valve in the original cooler lines. Cooler supposedly adds a lot of life to the 46RE. How much are you paying for a rebuild or are you doing it yourself?

I know there's a cooler in the radiator. I'm talking aux. cooler, which you already know.

From reading KOR articles and such, it seems that the threads are different between the 5.2/5.9. I am definitely thinking of putting one on it, I'm just not sure when I'll do it or what I'll put in.

We're doing the rebuild ourselves. Our neighbor is an auto transmission new/used parts dealer. We can get good parts for a decent price from him. For example, we got a governor pressure sensor and solenoid for $45. He practically gave us the sensor. The (new) sensor is a Borg Warner product and is the heavy duty unit. Very cool.

Paid for a set of used shafts for the 44a and should have those next week.

Things left to do-
  • Setup and assesemble Rear-End
  • Rebuild and install transmission and overdrive
  • Install new CV-boots upfront
  • Swap remote start over to 5.9
  • Put dash back together
  • Reinstall front bumper
  • Swap trailer hitches
  • New OEM key cut
  • Install PCV system with new grommet

Sounds like you found the elusive PCV grommet? Just curious, what did you get and where?

No. Unfortunately, Dad hasn't been able to get to the dealer to see if they can get it. I asked him if he thought he could get there this week. He said would try.

Got the (ring and pinion) rearend setup, but 3 of the parts (pinion nut, oil slinger, and lockpin) are for the wrong diffs. 2 parts for the d30 and 1 for d35. I'm Gonna call drivetrain today and try to order the right parts.

Bum deal on the R&P parts.

As far as the grommet, allow me to try and help. Taken from the factory parts catalog that I happen to have for the 98 ZJ, here are some part numbers. Quoted prices are from Moparpartsamerica.com, your local dealer will probably be slightly more:

PCV Valve: 53051135 - $5.13 ($6.35 list)
PCV Grommet: 53030017 - $3.64 ($4.50 list)
Breather Grommet: 02946079 - $4.12 ($5.10 list)

Those are factory parts so they should work. I didn't have time when I was doing my Mopar cast aluminum covers to wait for the correct grommets to come in, so I just got what they had to make it work. Now I am not so sure the factory grommets would have worked anyways. Good luck and let me know how it turns out. If its not too much trouble, could you post a picture of whatever grommet you wind up using? If it works for you, it might work for me.

Oh. We have the part numbers (I have the 98 ZJ catalog as well), it's just that Dad hasn't gotten around to going. He has to go get new keys cut (the title/Jeep is in his name), so he's gonna get it/order it when he's there.

I'll let you know how it goes.

-Got the rear diff finished. Just need to fill it with fluid/modifier and mount the tires.
-Tranny parts arrived yesterday. Getting all the stuff cleaned up and rebuilding it. Overdrive hasn't been rebuilt yet, so ONE MORE week until it's all done. We've had it for almost 2 months and it's still not done...
-Put the dash back together along with the remote starter. Gauge cluster got its needles painted.
-Reinstalled bumper cover with brand new nylon blind rivets. (if anybody's interested in these, I can tell you where to get them.
-Sandblasted/painted the diff cover and tag. Looks much better than rust.
-Front shafts are out and ready for cv boot install. It's had its hubs replaced recently. They're awfully shiny.

Some pictures because I was bored...

I love it. 5 days til I get to take it for a spin!

All transmission parts are cleaned up and ready for a rebuild. Overdrive unit is back from our tranny guy and ready to go.

Made a write-up on how to refinish the cluster needles. Looks much better than the old faded.

Got the blank keys cut for free. The left key is correct...no wonder the lowes copied keys (right) didn't work!
Also got the elusive PCV grommet from jeep, but couldn't get it installed. Too damn stiff.

What we did this weekend-
  • Rebuilt and installed transmission
  • Installed transfer case
  • Reinstalled PCM and overflow bottle
  • Got the pcv system in. The grommet was a *****. (I'll leave it at that...)
  • Filled everything with fluid
  • Change oil with Mobil 1 10w30 HM / Purolator One filter
  • Started it - it sounded sexy

Once we put the fluid in the transmission it started to leak. We figured it was just the overflow vent, but that seemed unlikely. Worst case scenario, we had to pull it back out and put a new o-ring on the oil pump.

WELL, dad drove it to get gas and said it shifted fine. Doesn't leak anymore.

HOWEVER, the transfer case makes noise, similar to that of a bad rear overdrive bearing. He also said that the VC appears to be bad. Looks like a 242 swap will be happening sooner than later.
