1995 YJ My dedicated thread

Hello everyone,

I am new to jeeps fresh from the import street scene...I am happy to be done with hondas that run 7 sec 1/4 on a bone stock engine...

I don't have any clean pics yet, I was way too excited to get everything set up and ready for today and I have after pics just to be sure... I bought the jeep for a great price, and got the winch for $250 and installed it all at work (Mitsu dealership). Well, with no further Adue...Oh wait a sec, I have trail pics coming too.. My springs are all saggy so I need to get a lift (great time to upgrade) as my shackles were hitting every damn thing. I also broke the flange on my downpipe from the header, hopefully JB weld will hold me off until I can get a new exhaust.

here comes

I did have a question about my jeep that I found when under it. screwed to the x-fer case housing was a red aluminum plate. It says New Process Gear at the top and Syracuse NY on the bottom. Of the other things on it the only one that makes sense to me is Ratio : 272. Now I hear people talking about 4.11 and such and am clueless if I have way shorter gears or what? I have been wondering what diffs I have and such to see where I am and where I need to start.

Nice YJ. It will look great with a lift and tires. You probably have 3.55 gears- I have the 4.0 I6 Manual and that is what I have at least. The transfer case is geared 2.72, which is common to most Jeeps as far as I know.

Link to transfer model NP231/NVG231 on 1995 YJ:

Low range is 2.72 and high is 1.00. The reference to 4.11 gears is to differential gear ratio and a stock YJ would have come with a reverse cut Dana 30 in the front:

http://jeep.off-road.com/jeep/Photo-courtesy-Rick-Boiros/ArticleStandard/Article/detail/261407

and a Dana 35c in the rear:

If you want to see the complete year by year breakdown, go here:

http://jeep.off-road.com/jeep/article/articleDetail.jsp?id=277032

"Axles in the YJ included a Dana 35 non clip rear axle from 1987 to ~1990 then a c-clip version until the end of production, there was also a Dana 44 available on a limited number of Canadian YJ's. A limited slip differential was available for the D35.Drum brakes were standard on all rear axles. The front axle used was a Dana 30 high pinion/reverse rotation axle. This is a full floating unit. Disk brakes were standard on the front of all YJs. Gear ratios ranged from 3.07 to 4.10. Manual transmission axle ratios are from 4.11:1 to 3.73:1, I-6 equipped have 3.55 to 3.07:1."

Great info. I really will get a lot of use from it. One thing I also have had a hard time putting 2 and 2 together... Is a 4" RC lift or 4" RE lift, they looks similar, but $400 difference. and with a 4" lift I think I need a Slip yoke eliminator kit? Seems intense for the install. Is it needed with either kit or both or does the x-fer case drop take away the need for that. Thanks again for all of the info, I am offically addicted to wheeling...

Only have one decent pic of me on the trails...This seemed to be a big problem of mine, the tires kept getting full of mud and I got high centered a few times...

Welcome to the JeepForum, you will find it to be an endless source of ideas and information on modding your Jeep. I have a pair of YJ's (89 & 90) and have made a ton of changes over the year's. Hope you enjoy the Jeep and the rest of the Jeepers as much as you can, it is an amazing vehicle and will surprise you with its capability. Also, congratulations on graduating from the "ricer world".

Thanks, I had more fun on Saturday getting dirty than in any form of racing or anything car related. Aside from the back seat wrestling matches with a few girls...but even the Jeep attracts more looks than my old TT 300zx...
