1988 YJ Steel top

This is my 1988 Wrangler , 258 with A904 and NP249, 31x10.5 Firestone ATX 23°, 1.5" Lift via shakles.... steel top and troop seats (the back seats -yeah, 2 back seats- are logitudinal not transversal), homemade bumpers & roof rack, M8000 Warn winch (I'll replace the wire rope).

More pics (part 2)

...
Ok, note that just have a 3rd. door on the back, no gate & glass, one piece... the 3rd. door have the tire carrier (ASP I'll make a rear bumper with tire carrier and gerry cans and hi-lift carrier) the back seats fold upside to maximize the cargo space, note the head liner in the steel top...
In Venezuela these tops are considered the "poor" top because the fiberglass top came with the RENEGADE version (the cool looking.... the luxurius), and the steel top came with de basic version (the workhorse, the budget version), but many people still do prefer the steel top... I'll take pics of a friend Jeep, a long YJ (as CJ8 but Wrangler) with steel top and troop seats (same as mine but long wheelbase and the double back seats -4 of them). The shakles thing.... I bought it in very very bad shape, those shakles was there when I bought it. I lost my job months ago, I'm unemployed so I work on it whenever I can (money... dirty money ). In February start work again (in a Renault dealership) so then is when I'll be spending some cash on my beloved son

For sure!!! I would love to see that. Are the YJ-8's common there? If they are, I might just have to do a road-trip!!!

YES! they are common, all of them are steel tops, and they are considered workhorses because very often are used to carry people in the bad neighborhoods of Caracas (as a public transport ....the long version of the Toyota FJ40 too) and for this reason are a little bit pricy... For example:
http://www.tucarro.com.ve/Jeep-Wrangler/TCA-dcj-28g.html
Of course this is a frankestein kind... V6 4.3L Chevy vortec but usually this is the average price.... BsF.45.000 (U.S $9000)
The CJ8 don't was sold in Venezuela as CJ8, was the LONG CJ7 instead, but came with the same steel top: http://www.tucarro.com.ve/Jeep-CJ-7/TCA-mbx-60w.html (U.S $6500)
Another, older hard top was the called LLANERO, came with CJ7's, is a steel top too, an a example: http://www.tucarro.com.ve/Jeep-CJ-7/TCA-nax-13y.html (U.S $5750) note that is similar to the LLANERO II (the last CJ7's came with the hardtop like mine are called LLANERO II) but the glass reach and bend the corner and have gills under the glass ....another example: http://www.tucarro.com.ve/Jeep-Renegado/TCA-sai-46s.html (U.S $4900)
So... considering a road trip?....just fot fun, in the back way to Canada you could try to cross the Darien gap to test your new Jeep

If you want a steel top....

For less than U.S $200 plus S&H could have one (that needs to be repaired and painted -some rust), the problem is the S&H....
http://articulo.mercadolibre.com.ve/MLV-10647869-techo-de-jeep-cj7-_JM includes the 3rd door (rear door) and the glasses & seals, but don't includes the other doors (square corner)

I had to look that up ... Wikipedia - Darien Gap. I probably wouldn't do it with a new toy - but - do you think my '88 YJ could do it?

Maybe, just put in a roofrack, though front bumper (like mine), better winch ...a M8274 or >12.000lbs... remover the rear fender flare, put dual optimas yelow top, 4 or 5 gerry cans in the roof rack, 60" Hi-Lift Jack, remove back seat to fill up with all the gear as you can... yeah, could be... after that invite 3 o 4 friends with same kind of preparedness and... have fun out there!

9500lb winch on front - check
roof-rack on hardtop - check
60" highlift (can see it in the picture) - check
Pullfender-flares - why? They don't rub
Front-bumper has killed its share of deer, trees and rocks - no need to change - Maybe weld on the stinger that I made and is sitting in my basement
Dual batteries - in the plans

Friends with equal or better rigs - lots of them - now - I just have to convince them that a road-trip is in order
