Saving up for a 3 core rad, shocks and axle universals (or whatever you want to call them.)

Found a 1985 Mercedes 300CD with a blown shock tower, running. Talked to the guy and he said it's mine for $300. So the CJ7 will be getting the OM617 diesel swap in the near future (I'll be using an external slave ax15 for the tranny and a clocking ring to mate to the d300)

Bought the Mercedes, and man did it take forever to get out. All 4 wheels were rusted tight so we had to jack the front of the car up and dig trenches for the dolly to ride under the front tires

Got it home though

The starter is set and won't crank but the engine spins free so it's not set up.

The Mercedes purrs like a kitten! Chased the rats nest of wiring and she fired right up! Got the front driveshaft under the jeep, and got to take it for its first drive! Not it's time for getting the brakes in and fuel system buttoned up. Then all the little things will surface.

So stoked! I can't wait to get it on the road.

Also, the adapter from Mercedes 4x4 adapters mates the om617 to an ax15 bell housing and clutch. According to what I've read, my existing t4 has the same pattern as the ax15, with the difference potentially being in the pilot shaft diameter. I have a lathe so I can turn a bushing to adapt the two if need be. Using my t4 is attractive because I don't need to purchase a clocking ring for the ax15 and setup for hydraulic clutch, new tranny mounts, ect. Obviously the ax15 is superior to the t4 in terms of durability but the Benz engine makes comparable hp to my current setup but with less tq, so I think I'm fine for a while.

Let me know what you think!

Stick with the t4 and save up for a better tranny later.

Almost on the road, but need a rad, shocks, and some odds and ends.

Does anyone have some used shocks that will work with my 2.5" lift they would be willing to sell? Used is okay

Decided to go a different route, and pulled the engine. My shocks and radiator came and fit great, though I will need to buy/make some shackles to give me another 1" up front

I bought the Mercedes engine adapter and will be installing it ASAP.

Pulled the engine from the Mercedes, power washed and cleaned it, and installed the adapter. Next up is mocking mounts! The MB om617 is about 4 inches shorter than the I6, and roughly the same weight. I will have to clearance the oilpan, and maybe do a little more lift up front. The mounts just about line up to the jeep mounts too

Mounts were made and engine was dropped in. Wiring was converted to the simple diesel, and just about everything was put back in. I made some shackles that raised the front a good 2-3 inches and now I have an inch of room between the pan and front diff. (Still need to clearance pan.) I have the shutoff solenoid in, and the glow plug relays in, and it's now turn key. She makes over 80PSI of oil pressure cold. This engine is a TRUE mechanical diesel, as you can pull the battery out, pop one hose off the shut off solenoid, bump start and you're off. The mercedes' shut off is vacuum operated, which is kinda neat to me, as you shut the key off and a second later the engine quits (a slight delay in between.) To those that bash it for being gutless off the line I have to disagree, a simple screw turn on the pump makes a HUGE difference. ("Ups" the off-boost fuel delivery.) I actually forgot my e-brake was on and was turning around with one of the rear tires dragging, and that's just idling, it's a pretty torquey engine for only 3L.

My first drive! No idea what youtube did, but it tried to fix the camera shake and made a few parts really wavy.

I like it. Not many 17 year olds can take on a project like that.
Good luck on getting it finished up.

Measure with a Micrometer
Cutter with an ax
Beat it to fit
Paint it to match
