1983 CJ7 Rebuild
Hey all, new here, and new to the 4x4 scene. I'm 17 and have been a mechanical minded person from they day I helped my dad wrench on our own cars and bikes. I've owned multiple dirtbikes, 4 wheelers, snowmobiles, ect, and recently bought a 99 Kia Sportage, which I lifted 3.5" (suspension) and ran 31"s on. It was a fun rig, but I wanted something different. Before I was even born my dad purchased my 1983 CJ7 from a cousin that had blown the 4 speed tranny in it. The rig had 60,000 miles at the time. My dad bought headers, a Holley 4 brl and an offenhouser intake for the I6. Both axles have been totally rebuilt, warn hubs, new leafs, stripped and primed frame, and a fiberglass tub were purchased. There literally are shelves of the CJ parts haha. Since it wasn't "my" project, I never was into rebuilding it, so it's sat for a total of about 20 years... until now. I recently had the opportunity to drive a 2002 wrangler with the top and doors off (on 33 Mickey thomsons) and literally fell in love with the jeeps right then and there. Something about looking down and serif the road fly by and watching those tires rolling down the road totally clicked with me.

So, crazy long intro aside, here's where I'm at. I really want a diesel in this jeep, but want to keep the stock axles, t case, and if possible the tranny. Cost wise I was thinking a 6.2? Don't flame me, I know there's a million better choices out there, but I'm on a TIGHT budget, and can't afford a 4bt. The jeep is going to see 90% road use and the rest is open fire roads.

The tub is just sitting on the frame, and still needs to be mounted, and all the holes cut, where can I get a template?

Should I do a diesel swap now, since the frame is just a roller, or put the I6 in and swap later?

I6 now. Its got plenty of power and not enough credit.

I'm dropping the I6 in now, what side should each engine mount go? There's one with a wide spaced 4 holes (this one is longer also) and one that has closer spaced 4 holes (this one is shorter.)
I've attached a pic of what I currently have the engine setup like. Is that the correct mount for the drivers side?

Looks like that started life as a Laredo. When I got my '85 Laredo the place I got it had a few Jeeps. The only ones that caught my eye were the '83 black Laredo and '85 black Laredo. I liked the stripes on the '85 better and it was in a little better shape so that's what I ended up with.

Looks like you've got everything you need to get this done. Just don't lose focus and you'll have a nice rig someday. Once you get the Jeep bug it's hard to shake.

I'll most likely be painting the fenders white to match the body. I have a harbor freight gun, and it actually lays paint really well.

I want to go all white body, black fender flares, wheel spacers (1.5") black rims and black accents. It would look good I think

A little update:
Inherculined the entire frame, have got the tranny and skid plate in, the hood is now on and the body is mounted on 2" spacers.

Could someone make me a template for cutting out the firewall? Or have a spare firewall the could send me? I'd be willing to pay you

i have a firewall from a 1982 cj7 it is steel and has some rust but the firewall is overall in pretty good shape

A little update:
The body is bolted down, the tank is in, the dash is in, interior wiring in, doors on, intake and exhaust on, firewall cut for all accessories. It took a lot of work.

Is that the stock windshield or did you put in a fiberglass frame? I am having trouble with my windshield.

Stock windshield. It''ll eventually be fiberglass (as will the front clip.)

I did the nutter bypass (removed sooooo much wiring) and got it running
