1981 cj7 carb troubles

so the stock carter carb has... lets say given out. i'm upgrading it anyways, so what's a good carb to go to for good/reliable off-road use, and street use? i dont really know but i've been told going above 400cfm with the 258 engine makes it run bad? i have a 2 barrel manifold, so will i need to replace it if i get a 4 barrel carb? is there a 2 barrel carb out there that'll give me the reliability and power i'm looking for? looking for suggestions, let me know
