1979 CJ5 Build

Hello,

Thought I would post some pictures of my CJ build that has taken me approximately 5 years on and off. I was able to get it running and driving recently and thought I would put some pics up. Hopefully, it will provide some insight into your build. I will be posting more pics of the build and future progress as there is much more to do and add.

It's a Jeep, just empty every pocket and keep goin!

Originally bought the Jeep off of Craigslist, drive train and frame was in great shape, body not so much. I was going to wire wheel the frame but after a very short time gave up and sand blasted.

Frame after sand blasting and Holbrook long leaf's installed. Factory skid plate had to be notched for the new spring hanger location and I lost one skid plate bolt to the frame on both sides. I plan on making a custom plate anyway.

Original tub was shot beyond my ability to repair so I contacted Willys Overland Motors in Toledo for a replacement. New tub was LineX'd inside and out before it arrived.

Started getting new parts for reassembly. Ordered Seats, Headman Headers Howell EFI, Flowmaster 50 series muffler duel diaphragm brake booster and Painless Wiring kit to start with. Upgraded intake from stock cast iron single barrel to an aluminum duel barrel from an 82' CJ.

Ran into quite a few issues.

1. Seats would not fit on stock seat bracket.
2. Seats would not install due to stock roll bar. Had to make custom, built like older CJ that bolted to rear finder well.
3. Brake booster left very little room for intake. Had to use on out of a 95 chevy tahoe.
4. Due to Howell TBI the stock throttle linkage would work, linkage for a stock CJ with V8 worked fine.
5. Had to install CV style drive shaft (Tom Woods) due to angle that extra lift from Holbrook leaf springs.

All CJ5's with tail gates that I have ever seen have chains that hold the gate loosely, allowing for a lot of rattling. Here was my idea to modify the tailgate and eliminating the ears on the outside of the tub for a cleaner look. Also, here is how the F-250 shock towers look in the fitment stage. They were fully welded in and bolted later.

Here are some pics of clearance issues with both the seats and intake. Seats would not allow for the stock roll bar to be use so a new one was built. The intake fit but clearance with tight with a duel diaphragm brake booster.
