1975 CJ 6 on the skinny....
This is my first jeep. I drove my little brothers CJ 5 in the early eighties and I loved it! I was looking for a CJ 5, but timing and cash price leaned me towards the CJ 6. My first thought was to cut it down to a 5, but then a little more study and sleeping on it I decided to keep it a CJ 6.
Well... AMC 258 I6, T - 14 three speed trans, Dana 20 transfer case, Dana 30 front end, and a Dana 44 rear. I'm going to keep the front drum brakes, and only replace initially what has to be. It will be a fair weather seasonal, that is I'm not going to invest into doors and top. I plan on still building a CJ 5, and it will have a hard top and doors, but that is another thread!
So far I'm really happy with what I got. There is plenty of rust but nothing that can't be gone through. The whole rear end (body) was rusted out and the PO did some strange tail gate and 4X4 bumper with tire rack thing that only made it worse. Enough said, pictures are worth a thousand words.....
This is how I found it. Look to me like it was begging for me to take it home, so I did.
Again, the rear end is in bad shape. I'm going to have to repair it before I can even get the tub off. I'm going through a lot of little things. The wiper motor needed a wire repaired and insulated. The blower motor was hard to turn, a few shot of wd40 and some spinning by hand loosened it up. Hook it to the battery as well and spins great!
The speedo works so I decided to black out the bottom and clean it up. I copied the idea from another image I found. The fuel gauge had already been replaced with a dash mount, as well as the temp. I like the gauges vs the warning lights.
Enough for now, plenty more to come, DAN

Got to repair the air box today. I laid a layer of fiberglass on the inside edge. Built up the low spots with JB Weld, and laid another layer of glass on top. Still taking things apart and I'm pleasantly surprised at all the fasteners. I've only had to cut off three so far. (Knock on wood) Got the wiring harness out. Got my steel for the rear end repair, hope to do some welding Saturday. There are only 500 holes drilled in this poor thing, going to take a while to get them all filled.
Plenty more to do,
DAN

Estimating how much steel I'm going to need to get the tub were it should be. I'm coming in at about 32 square feet, and I wonder how much is in a CJ 6 to begin with? All the wires are out. Steering column is out, hood is free. Excited about working on the rear end tomorrow...

Got started on the rear end. Ran a one inch square tube for the top, and covered it with one panel. Things were going great then I ran out of wire! Oh well, feel like I got something done today.
I'll get some more wire!

No images today..........I got the trans and differential cover off. The Dana 20 shifter was very loose, the shifter base where it is welded to the pivot bearing is broke loose. (Easy fix) Cut off a few body mount bolts, and cut out the bad parts of the dash. Covered it all up before it began to rain.....

I got the front end off today. The bottom center is in bad shape, same as the rear end.
Played with an old crane winch I've had for a hundred years, bench tested it and it works just fine.
Good day,
DAN

Worked on the front end today. Got the center bottom of the grill worked out...
The left fender was the worse. Several cracks and dents got repaired...
The right was not as bad...
They are ready to start wire wheeling tomorrow. Need to finish the seat brackets then as well...
Till then,
DAN
