I finally pulled the trigger on the Olympic racks. I was hesitant at first because I had Olympic tube bumpers on my YJ and wasn't a fan of their powder coating and long time reliability. However I figured since these wouldn't be installed year round these would hold up better. Surprising to me the powder coating and welds on these racks has improved over the last tube bumper I bought in 2005 so I was already impressed before they were even on the Jeep.

The front bar requires the top to be down (no surprise judging by the pics) and you remove the giant thumb screw that holds the gull wing (black plastic around the doors for the soft top) and use a grade 8 bolt to hold the rack on instead.

The rear bar requires a little more effort. I have an 05 Wrangler with the "puffy" roll bars. This rack requires you to trim the foam under the roll bar padding (but not the rollbar covers). Unfortunately for me I also have the Bestop rollbar covers (I've reviewed them here, they are an awesome upgrade)...since the Bestop covers are a little more robust than the factory canvas they didn't want to accommodate the "clamp" of the rack. I realized with slightly longer bolts it would be fine so I bought some 2 1/2" grade 8 bolts at home depot. Voila! The racks are installed.

The racks have a loop for you to slip the tie down/ratchet strap through and are strudy enough to carry 2 kayaks or whatever your imagination can think up. I'm glad I bought them...before I just placed the kayaks on the windshield frame and center hoop...they always threatened to slide off the side and cornering with them there was unnerving.

If you need racks to carry kayaks (should work with a pontoon boat) or simple building materials this is an economical product with a good finish and easy installation.
