Great radio to use either mobile or fixed station.
Have had my two 857's for 4 months already.
One mounted in my ZJ, with detachable face in the dashboard, and a Tarheel 2 antenna out back.
Great receptin, and great audio reports all the time.
For the money, the best bang for the buck.

Pros: HF/VHF/UHF Mobile Transceiver. Awesome capabilities with the Yaesu FC-40 Auto Tuner. I have made contacts as far away as Russia.
Cons: Not weatherproof. Need FCC license, but well worth it.

Comments: This radio and auto tuner combination is unmatched in my opinion. It has a remote head, so you can mount it virtually anywhere. I have the MH 59A8J Mic, and can control most of the options right there. Screen is clear and bright even with the top and doors off. Awesome rig. Mounted for 2+ years, and NO issues.

Pros: GREAT radio
Cons: none other than the unfriendly C.O.P. system on the 2.5 motor :-(

Comments: Be ready to battle RFI in ANY amateur radio installation. The Coil Over Plug technology simply SUCKS ! It's a mini Tesla Coil on each plug... Like a broad band (VERY BROAD) spark gap transmitter X cylinders onder the hood ...a REAL RFI NIGHTMARE !

Pros: small size, good sound 160-440, modified for 17 and 60M
Cons: none

Comments: Used to live in my F150. Rugged radio, DSP installed and works well.
All around nice HF/UHF/VHF rig for a vehicle. Not a contest rig, but perfect in the jeep for casual QSOs and HF listening while bouncing down the road.

Pros: Does almost all bands and modes. Compact, detatchable face, easy to mod, and remote mic available.
Cons: Lacks function buttons due to compact size so many settings are via menus. Only has 200 memories. No Cross Band Repeat. Only 20w on 70.

Comments: Great compact HF/6/2/70 mobile. I use mine for a base and a mobile base in the RV when I travel. Had it for 9 months and was my first HF radio. I'm not much of a DXer yet so I mainly use it for 2/70 repeater work. When I finnaly upgrade to "General Class" and get some more HF antennas up that may change, This radio will end up in my pickup to compliment the ft-8900r that I use in there now when I decide on what base I want to replace this one.

I would recomend this radio for anyone looking for an all in one radio. It would be my 1st and only choice in the mobiles if it would just cross band.

Comments: This tranceiver is about the best unit I've used so far for HF mobile operation. It covers all the ham bands 160 meters through 70 center meters. I use the High Sierra for HF-Diamound hf50cx for 6meters-Larson dual bander for 2&70 meters.

Comments: Bought the rig for the remote mount and small control head size. Added high stability oscilator to run digital eventually. Perfect for the XJ with plenty of flexibilty
