zj radio overhaul questions
I need a new head unit and only have 3 properly functioning speakers so I'm in desperate need of an upgrade when I get the extra cash. I'm looking at possibly a Kenwood or Pioneer head unit, and looking at maybe some Kenwood 6.5's in the doors. The factory tweeters still sound amazing, if a little louder than everything else.. Not sure if I wanna replace those or leave them. I'm also really, really debating bypassing the factory amp and re-running all the wiring from the headunit out. I've been wanting to do it for a while, give a bit more modern quality sound system in it, but never had the money nor the time to do it.
Any advice for me in planning this project? Any specialty tools you think are a must for digging into this?
Extra parts I'm already looking at getting, a buttload of zipties to make up wire bundles, the foam door inserts to cover the door speakers internally. a couple wire coat hangers for the awkward pulling cases, wire goo(the lubricant for running wires through conduits), a full set of new door panel clips, too many insulated wire connectors(probably standard bladed ones)and probably around 60ft of speaker wire to start with.
That list sound about complete?
side questions.. Do you guys run any kind of foam or silicone between the speakers and the doors to help eliminate any vibe or rattle? Do you recommend drilling out new holes for the speakers or getting adapter plates on the 6.5" speakers?
