I just got a really cheap 97 ZJ TSi with the Infinity audio package. After spending the weekend replacing the blown rear-end, I noticed the previous owner decided to remove the stock stereo and since he didn't understand how to bypass the amp under the back seat, he cut the wires and ran a length of CAT-5 to the back of the very crappy Pioneer head unit to power up only the rear speakers. Yeah so anyway, I don't like this. The Jeep has steering wheel controls that aren't hooked up to anything anymore but I'd like them to work. So I guess my questions are:
Can I use a factory WJ (or similar) stereo in my ZJ? The reason I want to do is so I can regain the use of my steering wheel controls and also I've seen people who have tapped into the WJ stereos for an AUX input. I'd like to run my iPod into whatever I get. I can't find a picture of whatever came stock in the Jeep so I don't know if they have the 8-pin CD changer controls on the back or not. If they did, I'd be happy to use one of those instead. In any case, the operative word here is cheap. I know I can spend a grand or more on an after-market head unit, correctly wire it up, then get an adapter to make the stock steering wheel controls work with it and then hope that the new head unit will talk to the iPod but at that point, we're already talking about more than what I spent on the whole car.
Maybe this is just such a crap idea I should just learn to love the Pioneer head unit and forget about the steering wheel controls but I'd love to see this work. Thanks for any help.
