no one I know of makes a shallow marine, but marine doesn't mean waterproof anyhow, just corrosion resistant. Anyhow, seems every company now has their version of the pandcake sub. Find the one you like.

I mean best is really subjective, as SirGCal said, everyone pretty much has their own. JL has the 13.5" shallow mount and clarion has a similar design on i believe a 10" and a 12", but most people go with brands they recognize over actually listening to them. Go out and see if you can see some in an application you would be using and then decide what is "Best" for you. Im personally going with memphis S-classes, but thats my personal choice. I'll let you know if it was a good decision or not.

and to second what SirGCal said, i've never heard of a shallow marine, and marines like he said are more corrosion resistant, thats what you are paying all that extra money for.

Infinity makes an all in one 10" powered slim design. Might want to check it out.

I like the MTX TT6510. I've had it now for over a year and it's been great.

They scrapped the 12" well before production last year. I had one on order, got the return payment. The 13.5" is a monster but, wow pricy.
The formentioned Memphis subs are actually quite impressive. I just finally got to hear a shallow S this weekend and it surprised me. All shallow subs are pricy by design. These really aren't that bad.

The marine subs mounting depth is 5". Mearly 2" more that the S Class. If you want that marine grade reliability, 5" isnt too ridiculous.

It might be, if someone was trying to do the in-seat for an 03+, 5" would be way too deep where 3" wouldn't. The slim subs are for very specific and creative installations, not for just dropping into trunk or cargo space. They are built for a specific reason and they work great for that function where-as before you'd have to go without a sub or with very small drivers. Now you can get a full sized product in the same depth.
Most 10" subs of conventional design will be between 4-6" mounting depth. But that's just too much for some installs. We need 1-3" for many situations. And again, marine grade reliability isn't anything other than corrosion resistance. I can show you half a dozen marine grade products that can't handle splashes. The 'marine' grade stamp simply means resistant to salt corrosion. Today's products also often add many other water barrier features but that's NOT what the marine grade product means. They need a new grade for those devices to stop this confusion people have. Well, they do, it's called waterproof. And there are some out there. But marine grade does not equal waterproof. Not by a long shot. Many marine products go above and beyond what the stamp includes, getting splash resistant, etc. but the marine stamp itself doesn't mean such...
