Good thread - as I am anxious to install my new CB before Moab. I installed a CB on my old truck about 12 years ago but it only worked at close range (the antenna was never tuned and I am sure I made other install errors as well). I want to do it right this time...
I have the Rock Hard cage and plan to mount the CB overhead. I plan to mount the 3' top loaded antenna to the front windshield hinge (on the passenger side, near the radio antenna - any problem with that?). I think I have most of the basics figured out but would appreciate some feedback and advice here. I plan on running the power and coax wires along the top of the windshield and across (passenger side) down to the battery and antenna location. In the write up linked below, it is suggested to use a type of coax for the power & ground. I could not find this exact type of coax at radio shack. Can I use any kind of coax for this purpose? Should I just use some heavy gauge wire instead? http://www.links4jeeps.com/writeups/BasicCB/intro.php

Everyone probably wont like this, but it works perfectly for me. It's out of the way, and I didn't have to cut any part of my interior (call me a whimp, but I'd hate to do that). It's in between the drivers seat and the door.

I have a Cobra 75WXST. It is tiny, but I mounted the box for it on the inside of the cowl about two feet above where your left foot would rest. Not on the fire wall, but on the left panel.
I had to remove my seat to get it there. It was not fun, but it is up high and out of the way. I did not want it on the floor because I have been in water that comes up to the level of the seats and I did not want the electronics under there... |

Not a great picture but it's the best place for a big CB (Cobra CB 148GTL) like this....

Hey I have heard of a few guys wiring their CBs into their TJs & YJs stereo speakers. I have thought about doing it because I have trouble hearing mine from time to time because it is mounted on the back of my console. I can't really place it above my rear view like I would like to do because the guy who owned it before me drilled out some big hole dead center in the plastic up there. I covered that hole up with 3M velcro pads, ran my power cord up through the plastic and mounted my GPS unit there.
I was just wondering if anyone else had done it on here and could maybe post some pics and how they were satisfied by doing it. |
