Waterproofing CB and 2m mobile

I saw someone asking about the CB, but I didn't want to hijack his thread.
I have no idea how to do this, and I really want to since I will be running my TJ topless most of this summer, including a trip to OK. I just don't want to kill my electronics too much

My 1st question would be what kind of 2m rig are you running?

I have an Alinco DR-620. Remote mountable face. Sick the body in the center console or in the glove box, something like that to protect it, then all you have to worry with is the face. A marine/boat radio cover could work for that. My dad used one on his bike for his rig. never hand any trouble with it.

I'm running a Yaesu FT-1802. That might change to an FT-817 soon, but I still need to find out some things about it.

817, isnt that the all mode, all band mobile rig?

I looked and it doesn't do remote faceplate. But, it looks like the rig that was designed for backpack-DXing. If it is, then it should already be more waterproof than most rigs. Just keep it off the floor and you should be ok. The higher the mount the safer the rig from water.

In the TJ jeeps, alot of guys are mounting their rigs in the AC ducts in the center console. The 1802 may not fit, but the 817 may. An idea to keep in mind.

Ya, the 817 is a backpack all mode, which is one reason I'm looking into it.

THe 1802 is a little big, so as such I haven't seen any good way to make it waterproof or resistant in it's mounting.

To try and seal the 1802, you cantake RTV silicone and runa bead round every possible entry point (seams, under the knobs, around the spekaer jacks). It would look like trash and not guaranteed to work, but a thought.

I would mount them in a center console or modify the dash and concentrate on that being waterproof. Trying to water proof all the connections would be hard enough, and then you have to worry about heat.

Another option is to find a radio that meets mil-spec requirements, which includes waterproofing.
