Want a subwoofer, but don't want to sacrifice space.

yes you need an amp. if your not gonna give up space your not gonna get the best sound. you could try something like the kenwood self powered sub but not sure how it would sound under the seat or if it will even fit under the front seat.

i havent measured the console, but you MIGHT be able to make an 8" sub work there. If it will fit, and has enough air space, you will still have to do alot of work to the console itself, maybe fiberglass the inside since you probably wont have room for wood.
and you always have to have an amp when adding a sub..if you get a `basstube` or similar, it still has an amp, its just built in. Rockford Fosgate has a great sounding 8" sub and its pretty cheap..less than $50 shipped if i remember right...and you can get a very small amp for it. |

Take a look at the Qmax Invisabass. Its supposedly got pretty good bass for such a small unit. You would fit it under the seat/s of your jeep.
http://www.qmax.com.au/ PS, I have nothing to do with this company, but have just heard of their products through my local car audio forum where it has received some good results. |

he can build a box small enough to fit inside the console. i ha ve seen it done on here before. Memphis Audio has a 8" sub that only requires .2 cubic feet of space. which could be an option.

You can put an 8" in the console, or do an in-seat setup. I have plans for much better in-seat boxes than 33 eng offers on my website (see link in profile) for all TJ models. If you don't use your rear seat, the console is about the only other no-storage space. Well, you still lose storage, but not as much as in the rear. in-seat is the only option for losing no storage at all, if you run a seat.

You're going to lose storage one way or another. Even if you do an in seat setup, where are you going to put the amp? Under the seat maybe but that's only if your seat is always stationary, never out or tilted.
IMO, when you upgrade the audio, especially with subs just forget about the 'trunk' area. If you need it that bad, remove that back seat or tilt it forward. Otherwise, it's a TJ. It's a very difficult vehicle to mod when space is an issue.

I would also add that I think 99% of people have the rear trunk taken up. Either via sub or an amp, or both. I'm looking at maybe getting both back there if I can. Otherwise I'll look into the in seat setup.
Oh yeah, go listen to speakers. I think you'll decide that the loss in storage space is well worth the amazing sound.

I didn't lose any storage space with this little Kenwood inside my rear seat. Completely invisible with the seat cover zipped up and the sound is amazing for the size of the thing. I control the level with my head unit and I leave it on 5 out of 15 to get the right amount of bass to fill in the music. Of course, with the top down you gotta crank it up and when I had the soft top on I ran in on about 7 out of 15. The thing costs about $150 shipped on ebay.

the amp is built in on that sub. its a 6.5" sub with a 6.5" resonator. i doubt he uses it much with the seat up but he may.

Well, it looks like the rear seat is the only option. I like the kenwood, my question is the same,... is it an amp and woofer all in one there? that seems to be the easiest set up.
As far as sound vs storage/funtionality, I'm gonna go for the later. Like I said, I want something that sounds decent, but I'm not one of those guys that you feel comin' a half mile away. To me, its a vehicle, sound is a luxury. If I need to hear music in its entirety, I'll go to my mixing studio.

You could also place the amp under the front seat. Since you are only powering the sub you can get a small enough one to fit with a bit of creativity. |
