If it is the same brand as the old one then you might not need to buy a new its just different. But if the units are different brands youll need to buy a harness

but they sell them by the make of car and not by brand of head unit... thats why i was wondering...do all aftermarket head units have the same pin configuration in the back?

No they don't and even the same make may or may not have the same pin configuration.

If you used a harness that was made to plug into the factory wiring, and connected it to the after market deck, you can just cut the wires from the aftermarket deck off the harness and put the new ones on. That assumes you still have the wiring diagram or could find it.

Since a new wiring harnass that connects to the factory pin is only like $8 I would recommend buying a new one. The new head unit will come with the connector it needs, you solder the two harnasses together and it plugs into the factory wiring harnass. You'll want to be careful with the depth of the unit a lot of ipod ready units are deeper b/c the internal amp is larger.

I would recommend using www.crutchfield.com b/c they guarantee the fit (and will return it pre-paid if it doesn't) and they'll give you all the connectors you need.
