uniden cb radio mounting

Hi,

I am thinking of purchasing this CB radio:
http://www.circuitcity.com/ssm/Uniden-40-Channel-Mobile-CB-Radio-PRO510XL/sem/rpsm/oid/179206/rpem/ccd/productDetail.do

However, due to high-theft where i live, i want to be able to make some quick disconnect for it, so i can plug it in and take it out fairly easily.

Does anyone know if this is possible with this CB?

I guess my question is, how many connections are at the back of it, and whether it's possible to get (make?) something like a wiring harness that hooks up and disconnects quickly. The search showed some nice mounting ideas, but I didn't find anything about the "quick disconnect" for this particular CB.

Thanks a lot

There is are 3 wires that go into your CB. Mic, power, and antenna. I assume you would take the mic so that doesn't need to be disconnected. The power is basically your round simple plug in, much like what plugs into most consumer electronics and radar detectors. The antenna however is similar to your cable line for your TV. You plug it in and then screw to tighten. I am sure it would work without screwing it in but a big bump would knock it loose. Hope this helps!

Just use one of these:

And you might want to shop around, WalcottCB has that radio for $44.95 right now,

Ok, well if it's only two connections (antenna/power) that need to be disconnected then i can live with that.

are there any antenna preferences for this particular model? I am trying not to spend a ton of money on it, but as far as i know bigger is better? I'm looking for something semi reasonable both price and performance wise.

FireSticks or something like that (they are black with a red nub at the top) are rumored to be nice. I have a 3 or 4 foot antenna and never had much trouble findin my buddies. I have seen really long ones on jeeps before. Just seems like over kill tho. That said my buddy had a pathfinder with that radio and simply had a 1 foot magnetic antenna on the roof. Worked fine.

Check out the Electric, Audio, & 2-Way Radio Forum there is tons of info about antennae etc. I personally like Everhardt antennae. Here is the link to the forum:

If you don't mind spending a little more I'd look at the Cobra 75 WX ST

You can find it cheaper elsewhere, but heres a quick link:
http://www.cobra.com/index.php?page=shop/flypage&product_id=5&id=1

The body of the CB is actually just a small remote mount box that is hidden, and all the controlls are on the handset. This way you can simply unplug the handset and take it out of your Jeep and there would be nothing worth taking in there.

This is the unit I bought. I haven't mounted it yet though.

the handhelds would be nice for someone who would only have it in the truck for wheeling trips ... however, i hear they aren't as good, and a little out of my budget right now.

This month has been kind of expensive

$300 OME shocks
$150 OBA setup
$100 metal tubing for sliders (not counting own labour!)

(and a devistating $650CAD for school garbage )

www.firestik.com
www.walcottcb.com

I have used firestik antennas and mounting brackets for years and they are some of the best on the market at good prices. Bigger is better, until you start wacking the antenna on stuff. 3 - 4 feet tall will perform well and stay out of the way. Cheap antennas are worthless in performance and quality, Firestik is just a few dollars more. I have used the pictured wire disconnects on my radios before and it works great.

The Uniden, IMHO, is the best Radio on the Market.

Antennas - Firestik is good, Everharts, from what I have heard are great, but for a good all around good priced antenna you can't beat the Wilson.
Wilson makes a Flex-i-Whip that performs well is FLEXIBLE and tunes usually easily.

Coax, buy good quality, Belden RG-8X or Time Microwave 240 or similar, Belden is more common. Only buy enough to get from the CB to the antenna allowing for no sharp corners and a little extra, just in case.
You can use a string to determine the route for the coax then add a couple of feet.
Buy coax with one connector already soldered on the coax, which is the CB end, the Antenna end use Crimp Ring Lugs.

Ring Lugs make it easier to run the coax through the vehicle and keeps the holes smaller. The Ring Lugs are easier to put on the coax and easier to replace if needed.

So many things to consider and so little time, ha ha

Luck,

I've run both the Uniden 510 and the Cobra 75 in my '06; the Uniden, for whatever reason, does have better performance (using the same antenna and power setup). On the trail I don't know that it would be a downside - I'd assume that maximum range wouldn't be the over riding factor on the trail.

I just pulled the 510 out and remounted the 75 because I've pulled the doors off of the Jeep and the 510 was a pain to disconnect - the power lead, the external speaker, the antenna wire, and the two mounting screws had to be either pulled or plugged in. If it's something you'll be doing daily you may find it to be a trudge.

I've got the quick disconnect for the 75 mounted thru my dash next to the rocker switches and it takes only moments to uninstall/install the CB. I gain the weather channel over the 510, but lose something in maximum range on the highway.

But as you noted, they ain't all that cheap .

Maybe you could use Velcro to mount the CB? That would eliminate having to unscrew the mounting screws...leaving only the antenna and power leads (assuming you don't use an external speaker).

yeah... i saw the velcro solution already adn that's what i'm going with. The fact that you only have power and antenna to disconnect will make this a breeze. And with velcro, you don't have nuts and bolts, so you're guaranteed a squeek/rattle free installation....

Thanks everyone for their input.!

There's this way too... http://www.walcottcb.com/procomm-jbc2700-radio-slide-mount-p-142.html

Don't use the Antenna Connection though, always connect the Coax to the back of the CB directly with a PL259.

There used to be a four wire model that allowed the power wires (red and black) and the remote speaker to be hooked up through the Slide Mount, it may still be avalable but I can't find one.

luck
