Stock are 4x6", but if you buy an adaptor you can fit 5.25" speakers in there, which sound much better

Aftermarket 4x6 speakers won't fit the non-standard 4x6 opening used in early TJs like the '97. The bolt pattern is different and there's a lot of cutting and drilling to make aftermarket 4x6 speakers fit and even then they won't fit properly. I know because I had a '97 and tried mounting aftermarket 4x6 replacments in it. Aftermarket 4x6 speakers do fit later model TJs, I'm not sure when Jeep standardized the front speaker opening.

You're much better off with installing the speaker adapter plate and running round 5.25" speakers instead which sound much better. Polk is one brand that will work well because it doesn't take a lot of power to sound good as many aftermarket speakers do.
