Tj Mount For Cb Radio

Hey. I am looking for a cheap cb radio for the jeep. Was gunns use if mainly for trail ride communication. Does ne1 know of a cheap good CB, or a good way to mount the CB. Keep in mind its a DD. I was gunna run the antenna cable thru the back of the jeep to the tail gate, and thru to the tire carrier so Its an easy mount. I would love to see pics. Im sure there is a threat sumwhere, but no search makes it hard. Thanks guys.

Where are you at? I have a decent cheap RS one that I took out to put in a Cobra 75. Ifyou're close to SoCal I can hook you up...

My antenna is mounted with a small tab to the rear bumper. I ran the coax under the carpet and through the drain hole under the passenger side floor mat, down the fram rail and to the whip. Any radios made by Cobra or Uniden will last you years to come. You don't want a cheap CB if that's the only line of communication between you and your buddies. If you buy a small radio you can drill it onto the side of the console by your shifter or do what I did and mount it under the glove box. I've also considered building an overhead console out of black diamond plate or a strong steel to mount my rig to. I don't have any pics for you though.

Perhaps you could mount it inside your console and just open it up when you want to switch channels. Run the cable with the handle through the top with the console closed. I do this with my Ipod sometimes when there is nothing good on the radio. If you run it through the front of the console and close the lid, there should be no problems...

You can find a decent CB for $40 or so that will work just fine. I would suggest going with a Cobra or Uniden. Same as you, my TJ is a DD and I wanted a temporary mount for the CB as well. I got this idea somewhere on the net and really like it. The CB is attached to the top of the center bezel by velcro and for power I just plug it into the cigarette lighter. When the CB is not in use I just put the rubber thing back in the tray to hide the velcro. This setup works perfectly for me.

As for the antenna, it is mounted to the tailgate with a homemade bracket. Got the write-up from here: http://www.4x4xplor.com/antennamount.html

I picked this place simply because it's out of my way, completely, and still easily accessible. Granted I have a VHF radio and not a mobile CB but I'm sure it would work just the same. There's metal behind the plastic shroud that's under the glove box. Couple bolts and it was in. Very secure. I've never had any rattling, or any shaking for that matter. I also have never had any issues with passengers and leg room.

I mounted the antenna on the tire carrier, and the cable I ran through the tail gate (easily fits through the existing hole for the brake light wires) and then under the carpeting and under the seats.

I went to Ambient Weather.com, I purchased a Midland for 34 bucks, that was freight included..... I have removed the sunvisors, so I just drilled a couple of holes through the provided mounting bracket, and then matching holes above the windshield, about as far left as I could go... the radio is just above the main line of sight for me.... I wanted to do the footman loop thing, but I apparently stripped the screws, now the won't come out! So I had to improvise..

Here is the cb that I got

And here is how I have it moiunted. This is an older picture, since I have added molding around it and cleaned it up a little bit, but you get the idea.

Here is the antennea mount on the rear bumper.

Mine isn't the best setup but it might give you some ideas. Here's my CB location. It's looks like it's in the way but it's not. Instead of hooking the wires directly to the CB, I used bullet connectors so I can unhook it and take the CB out if I want to. The wires and cable are zip-tied behind the dash so it's pretty clean if the CB is out (I've actually never taken it out). You can see the cable in thic pic but that was temporary, it actually runs behind the dash to the side of the tub, down to the floor and along there to the rear of the Jeep.

I mounted the antenna almostly exactly like TJdave's by drilling one hole through the stock bumper. I did that as a temporary location until I get a bumper/tire carrier but, to tell the truth, I like the location because the antenna doesn't stick up above the roofline. I don't like it on the bumper but I love the height, so I don't know what I'm gonna do.

Depending on how you mount the antenna, here's a good way to run the cable out of the Jeep. There's a rubber grommet thing in the rear corner of the tub near the rollbar that you can run the cable down through. If you want a brake light mount you can take the brake light off and pull the cable through the hole at the bottom of the brake light, then directly to the bracket. That's how mine runs right now and you can see the cable under the license plate in the photo, but if you want a bumper mount of some sort, you can pull the cable out the fenderwell instead, which is probably what I'll do,

I don't know, I had someone else tune it. It may be horrible but all I really need is to hear and be heard for a few hundred yards. TJdave's is on the bumper, maybe he knows his SWR?

My antennea is pretty tall and actually reaches up above my soft top so I don't have any interference. I do not remember exactly what my SWR was when i tuned it, but it was pretty low. I have never had a problem hearing or getting reception on a trail from either people in front or behind.
