temp gauge is going from hot back to cold??

the temp gauge in my 78 cj7 is going to propper running temp then immediately drops to just above cold...its a brand new speedometer cluster with the temp and fuel gauge tied in.. the jeep was warmed up when i hooked the gauge up for the first time,,it went to normal position and almost immediately dropped to alittle above cold. i know its at full temp cause i checked it with my infrared thermometer .. so im assuming its some kind of wiring issue but to me it seems pretty simple cause there is the sender (purple and white) wire and the power wire?? btw it has a new sending unit.. any input or ideas please and thank you

Sounds normal to me. When it drops, it means your thermostat just opened. It was more noticeable in winter with my Yj. It kinda bothers me that it doesn't do it in my JK.
