you mean the the oem amp? it's is a small triangular wedge that is part of the 'enclosure' inside the console. If you find an oem sub to buy typically the amp will be attached. If you are doing the 'replacement' woofer you will more than likely have to find somewhere to mount a new amp, as the factory amp is not very powerful for most aftermarket subs. If you're building a new enclosure to go in the console or using the tuffy console and you get creative you can probably work it in there. It's nice to have the amp accessible tho, in case you want to adjust the gain or crossover settings.

All counts are incorrect here. The stock sub is a 2-ohm DVC sub wired to show the amp 1-ohm of operation. At such, it's designed to receive ~ 75W from the amp. So dropping that to a 2-ohm conventional sub cuts that into roughly half. (4-ohms would be roughly half again).

I've done this mod for other people with various different subs and while some of them can be fair stock replacements, none of them are going to offer up stellar results beyond what the stock system was capable of (unless you're system was faulty or as many people, you just have the placebo effect).

To enhance the sound, insulate (rubberize or dynamat) the inside of the stock box. Add polyfill if there is none. This will help considerably sharpen up the sound of the stock enclosure.

I bought the sub now I can't figure out the wiring. I have an 03 tj, 1 red wire taped to a black wire, and a tan wire taped to a grey wire. Different sized plugs on 2, any suggestions? Thanx!

The thing to do here would be to outline what the wiring ended up being...

Ok, I've seen many responses to this question about if an 8" will fit in, how to replace it, etc, but I have a question about the stock subwoofer. Does anyone actually note, or can tell me what the mounting depth is for the stock subwoofer? I'll be swapping in a different sub pretty soon.

Thanks all

The depth can vary by using a dremel to remove a portion of the plastic from behind the sub. You do not want to mess around with the plastic enclosure. It is better to build a new insert from MDF or fiberglass.

Yes; Make an insert for the console that will be your box and you'll need an amp, you're best bet would be to set yourself up with an 8" if you're going to go through the effort. A shallow mount would probably make the task a bit easier.

MDF insert idea:

If you like kicker, but you should go somewhere and listen to any model kicker to get an idea:

The 400msx is a good cheap amp that'll match that sub:

I'm going to give this one a try.

I hope it's not too big for the opening. I haven't taken it out to measure yet. If it sounds decent I'll have one for sale pretty soon!!

Yes, I know it's 4-ohm, not sure what that'll do. I'm no audio expert. I was hoping that since the RMS wattage range is so low that it'll sound decent.
