Speaker Adapter Kits
Today I was playing around with my TJ and trying to see if any of the speakers I pulled out of my old truck were worth anything. I have two Polk 5" x 7"s and two Polk 6 1/2" round speakers. It seems like neither of those two sizes do me one bit of good.
I tried to see if the 6 1/2"s would fit inside the standard sound bar but the cone is too wide to fit into the opening so it looks like I'm either going to have to cut a little wider, which really wouldn't be awful but not exactly as easy as I hoped for. Plus I still am not positive if the cone depth is too great, I should have measured earlier. The other 5" x 7"s seem totally useless. But I have heard of brackets that allow you to mount larger speakers in the front. What options do I have here other than simply buying brand new speakers if I want to improve my sound?

I just went back outside to play around again. I think with some small drilling and maybe a few cuts, I could modify the sound bar easily to mount the 6 1/2"s, but I'm afraid that the cone might be touching the metal and possibly grounding itself out. In the front, it almost looks like the stock 4" by 6"s could be replaced by the 5" x 7"s without much difficulty. I mean it looks very possible but if anyone has done it, please let me know.

I fit Boston RM6's in my sound bar that are 6 1/2 in. I had to use a spacer because of the way the grill snaps on. I just had to drill new holes to mount it. and the grill meets with the fabric so it looks pretty much stock.

After having installed these today, I would venture a guess anything wider then 5.25 will push the (usually) centered tweeter too far behind the dash interfering with your soundstage. The 5.25 speakers are already 1/3 blocked by the dash, but only the midrange cone is obstructed. The tweeter still has a clear shot at the slots in the dash cover. 6.5's are a popular choice for the soundbar tho... with minor modifications. I personally chose all 5.25 simply to have matching speakers all the way around and I didn't want start drilling and cutting up the new baby ![]() |

Yeah cutting up and drilling are my exact fears. I just got this bad boy and I'm still new to working on things myself, I don't really want to take any chances and make a mistake although the 6.5" rears wouldn't be extremely tough I don't think. It does look like the 5" x 7"s would fit. I'm surprised nobody has talked or done anything with them yet because the width is actually narrower than a 5.25" and the length really isn't that great of a factor. There has to be something out there.
