Space behind sub?

Hey guys quick question. I am currently building a downfiring box. How much space does the sub need behind it? Since I am making a downfiring box, how close can the top of the box be to the back of the sub?

Hope that makes some sense! THANKS!

It really depends on the sub...a real high end sub, have the diameter but an entry level to mid level sub an inch or two should be fine.

It depends on the sub. it could be from 0.8CF to 2+CF. Check your mfg specs. I would leave at least 2-3" on the bottom for the bass to escape.

Thanks man!

Another thing, my box is going to be 33" wide and about 11" deep downfiring. Where is the best place to actually put the sub? Right in the middle or off to a side in the baffle?

its been a few years since I dabbled stereo gear, but like stated above, check the mf specs..... the space inside the box will be more importent the direct distence behind. But look it up and follow specs, sound will be affected greatly if not....... i know from experience, poopy box = poopy sound.

Behind the magnet of the sub, if the center is cooled (has a vent pole cooling hole) then you need clearance half the diameter of the hole. So if there's a 1" diameter cooling vent in the magnet, you need 1/2" minimum clearance. If there is no vent cooling hole in the magnet, you could go right up to the magnet (I'd still leave 1/8" or so though).

Infront of the sub between it and the floor, half the diameter is the optimum, but realistically, 2.5" for a 10" subis OK.

Depends... Off to the side is better if it's in the rear of the rig. Center is better if it's in the center of the rig (like an in-seat setup)... Changes with more than one sub, etc... It's all about placement and reflection.
