most people are not looking to run there jeep in a sound competion. Most, like me want the best bang for the buck. 3 of my buddies have sony head units, one has had his for 4 years with no problems. And the other two havent had a problem since they got them about a year ago. i started to regret my decision, but then i kinda got the vibe that alot of ppl are basing the sony makes crap off of old sony stuff.

I don't know why people complain about the sound quality of a jeep. The stock system isn't something worth bragging about, but heck, compared to many other vehicles I thought that it sounded pretty good. Maybe it's the difference of years.

Example, we have a 325XI bimmer in our family and I don't like the stock sound system. I'll take the jeep over that one. It's terrible if you listen to anything other than classical music and talk shows. No bass, no 'punch' at all to any music. Very clear, but it doesn't bring any music to life. It feels pretty flat.

Same with other vehicles I've heard.

I understand that a jeep doesn't have a great sound stage but I don't think it's hopeless either. You have to work with a small amount of space and limited placements for speakers. I think it's easy to find anything other than sony. But everyone's taste is different.

As for myself, Sony is at the bottom of my list. Have you heard their components? What I heard wasn't very good at all compared to many other brands. Kicker seemed like a pretty good brand if you aren't looking for anything too fancy (speakers/subs/amps).

Recommendations work too

This is what I'm getting:

Sony CDX-GT610Ui
I'm running this same unit in my Jeep with all stock speakers and it sounds great. I only use the tuner and the USB port. The CD skips easily, so I just rip from cd's and put the songs I want on the USB drive. I've been running this HU for about 6 months and no problems (other than the skipping from the cd player and I can live with that).

you can live with a cd player that skips? glad you can. i shouldnt have to take my time to copy music to a thumb drive because the CD player, that should work no questions asked, skips. thats just plain stupid. i would be on the phone with sony every day until it was fixed.

Do you have the stock center console subwoofer?

I was actually wondering about how that gets wired.

Yes, I have the center console sub in there and yes I can live with the cd player that skips because I seldom listen to it anyway. Like I said, I back up my music on the laptop and transfer them to the thumbdrive.

Edit: I wired the sub to the power antenna wire from the radio, works like a charm!

My friend has one of those systems. Except they all sit right on the drive. Something like 60-70 songs he has to sift through. No organization at all. I'm wondering, if you were to put those into folders, will the HUs that support USB pull up the folders and then the songs inside of them? I just can't believe that he puts up with sifting through so many songs just to reach one band.

I have my songs arranged by artists, album, song list. I have approximately 2.8 gigs of music in this arrangement. It comprises about 50 albums ( albeit I may have about 30 songs under 1 artist ). When you arrange the songs this way, the radio displays: Artist, Album, Song. It is like having a 50 CD changer. I can usually go right to the song I want to hear pretty quick, but usually I put the device on shuffle and let her rip or I can put the album on repeat and hear that one album, or I can just put one song on repeat as well. Also, when the unit powers back up, I pick right up on the song I was listening to when the unit was shut off.

The only real downside to the radio is the "READ" message you get when you power the unit up. The more music you have on your drive, the longer it takes to load. With the music I have on there now takes about 1 minute to load up.

over my many years of stereo stuff i have had about 15 or so cd players. i have had about 3 alpines and that will be all i ever get. i do like the eclipses but i have had an alpine 9856 for several years now. my volume knob messed up on a kenwood a few years ago where i would have to turn it for about 10 seconds before it would engage to turn up or down. i checked one out in a shop the other day and it felt the same as mine did, so i figure its the same technology. mine has too many options for me and can be kinda confusing to set up but i like the seperate sub controls, and third set of RCA's. i base some of this on looks too. i think alpines are some of the best looking ones out there. i'm getting both of my parents alpine 9872's for Christmas. i think everyone should have good sound, even my mom in her minivan listening to taylor hicks.

I like that deck, i would have bought it but the preout voltage isnt very high. So your not gonna get all the power from your amp & sub. So i kept my deck
