Replacing Factory Fogs w/ HID

I'm going to be changing my headlights over to HID soon, and I would like to do my fogs too. Does anyone know a good kit housing? My headlights are going to be 5000k so I want it to match.

Thanks

04 TJ

Well, first off; in some areas, it's illegal to put in HIDs where they did not come standard. Check your local regs to make sure it's legal.

Second you'll need HID specific lenses to not blind people. Standard halogen type lenses will not have the sharp cutoff HIDs need to be driver-at-you friendly. This could result in a ticket and/or inspection violation.

Third, most good replcement HIDs will come in a kit. Bulbs, lenses, ballasts. Even wire and relay in some cases. I wouldn't recommend getting a drop-in H4-type HID replacement unless you already have H4 HID lenses.

Last; HIDs aren't cheap. If you're trying to do it on the cheap, you're most likely not doing it right. They aren't the multi-grand pricetags they were just a year or so ago, but a proper kit is still going to run you a few bills each.

i can tell you right now that it IS illegal in Va to change out the headlights to HID's. plus you would need the high.low kit because Va also requires both. its illegal and depending on your area and what kinda mood the po-po are in it can and will get you a ticket. not to mention come inspection time you will not pass which means you cant drive the jeep AT ALL on the road till its fixed and you have passed the inspection.

Money isn't a big issue. I did get new housing for the headlights and they do have high and low. I just don't know what bulb to get for the fogs, that will fit the stock bulb holders? and is it possible to make ur fogs hid? or at least white? I know they are 6inch. When Inspection comes around I'll just change them out.

changing them out isnt going to help you when your driving. VSP has started cracking down on the illegal lights state wide.

Converting the fogs to HID would not be illegal because they are accessory lights. You can do anything you want to them.

To actually answer your question, your stock fogs should use a 55W "H3" bulb. There are drop-in kits for H3 bulbs. here is one: Standard H3 HID Conversion Kit - $41.99 : VVME.COM, Car Parts, HID KIT, Tattoo Kit, Ballast, Bulbs Double check your bulbs to be certain. Because of the wide throw of the fog lens and the intense brightness of the HID bulbs, I'd recommend only turning them on when needed. (Same principle as using any other bright offroad light) Also, you don't want to flash your hi beams a lot with the HID fogs turned on, since you'll be repeatedly turning them off and on as the fogs will turn off with the hi beams. HIDs don't like quick power cycles.

As for the headlight legality in VA, I haven't read their laws but if they're only doing a visual glare test, if you have a good set of E-Code housings, properly aimed, then you'd be ok. If they inspect the housings for the SAE/DOT stamp and then remove and inspect the bulbs, it's a different story. The intent of all of the HID laws is to protect drivers from the extreme glare produced from idiots that throw HID bulbs into standard housings that designed for bright bulbs. I current run 100/170W low/high bulbs in my XJ, but passed state inspection without a problem because I use E-Code housings and have them properly aimed.

actually, since there OEM, they have to be DOT approved to pass inspection or they have to be covered. also, in VA only 4 lights can be forward facing at any time while on the road. if you have more than 4 the others have to have covers. also, VA is not doing just glare test, they are actually testing the output of the lights. i have several friends that are licensed state inspectors. they are required to buy light sensors by next year or they lose there inspection status.

Kid next door to me did this on his fart can tuner car. One night I saw the police dropping him off. Turns out, people had been complaining about a car with bright headlights. Police officer saw him on the road, pulled him over, and had the car impounded. Told him the car could not be on the road with those lights, at least as they are installed and configured. Kid took them out because he could not afford the RIGHT HID conversion package.

factory TJ fog housings have an internal baffle that sucks, and the lens has way too much fluting on it to be effective.
If you want to think you look cool, get a quality H3 set of hid bulbs and put them in, and dont you dare run them on public streets, or i'll hunt you down and kick the lights with my duty boots.

If you actually want effective light, ditch the stock housing, and get a pair of hella 500FF lights at walmart, and a good quality pair of H3 hid bulbs.

I've actually done HID into 500FF before, and its effective.

Still dont be a ******* and run them on public streets.

There are SAE approved high/low conversion kits that'll fit a TJ.
If you live in a state that purely uses SAE for legality, you'll be fine.
