noisy cb

I read the sticky, but I'm wondering how many of you have to squelch the hell out f your cb during the day? I just got a $35 CB from walmart and a lil' wil antenna. During the day I have to put the squelch at about the 1 o'clock position (it only goes to about 5). Am I getting all this noise from it because it's a cheapie? It's not engine noise either cause it will do it with the jeep on or off. At night I can set the squelch to 10 o'clock. I also noticed that it happens near powerlines also. What do you guys suggest? Moving the antenna (its in the center of the roof right now) or what? Oh, the antenna has been tuned also.

Due to the sun's electification of the Ionosphere creates more noise on the CB, that is why at night you use less squelch.

Reason here is that the CB uses an AM signal and White Noise created by the power lines raises he!! with an AM signal.

Your CB sounds like it is working correctly.

One way of telling whether you're getting power noise (from the power going to the cb, not overhead powerlines)or antenna noise is to unhook the antenna with the radio on (dont key it up) If the noise goes away, it's being injected into your antenna system. Better coax will get rid of a lot of it. If it doesnt go away, you need to work on your power wiring.

But yes, there is a lot more ambient noise during the day than there is at night, the sun spots, more people talking...all kinds of stuff. A little bit of trivia...sun spots come and go in about a 11 year cycle. Every 11 years or so there are more of them than normal and it plays hell with CB's.

Well, last night i went out and found that the cb makes noise at night also. So i tried moving the antenna around and found that when I touched the antenna, the noise stopped. It's almost as if either the antenna is not long enough or it is not properly grounded. I thought wilsons were supposed to be good?

Wilsons are good but all antennas need to be properly grounded and tuned.
