Need input on 99 Cherokee speaker problems.

Hey guys, I'm having problems with my stereo/speakers in my 99 XJ. When I bought it, neither front speakers worked but both rear did. Eventually the left rear also went out. Today I dug into it a bit. I found that the left rear speaker is shot but the wiring is good. The right rear is my lone working speaker.

I braced myself to run new wires for the front as I have assumed they were broken in the door joint where they usually break.

I took a known good speaker and tried both front sides and got nothing.

So I cut the speaker wires behind the kicker and attached new wires thinking I cut out the bad part.

I hooked up the good speaker to the new wires before I got to carried away and I still got nothing.

So that leads me to believe that it's the actual radio unit.

I took some short leads with a speaker attached to rule out all wiring in between and jammed the wire into the back of the stereo where the plugs are to test each speaker. Both rears worked fine but I couldn't get the fronts to work at all......

Has anyone else ever ran across this problem before?

Where it actually is the stereo?

Am I missing something here or do you guys think I got it traced down?

I feel like it is actually the stereo but I want some other opinions before I go and buy a new stereo.

Thanks guys.

Anything else to look for before I go spend the money on a new stereo or do you think I have it traced right?

Ok, found out it was the actual OEM STEREO itself that wasn't allowing my front two speakers to work.

Good to know.

I think I'm going to get a pioneer with Blue Tooth over the speakers.

For speakers, I think I will likely go with 5-1/4" in the front and possibly 6-1/2" in the back.

I'm thinking kicker brand speakers?

i just upgraded my stereo from JVC to Pioneer. Was quite happy with it too.

In my old TJ I had Bostons and was happy with them. I have heard a lot of good things about Polk speakers and just ordered a set to try out in my sound bar. Hopefully they will be here tomorrow to test out. Will let you know how they sound.
