Need help with head units

First off, I know absolutely nothing about electrical, and even less about audio equipment.
I bought my '00 Cherokee (non-Infinity) with an ancient JVC KS-FX230 tape deck in it about 4 weeks ago.
I have acquired from a friend a Sony CDX-GT30W that I'd like to install, mostly because I don't mess around with cassettes, and I'm getting tired of radio only.

Worst case scenario, what am I going to need to buy to make this work? I have a friend offering to help put it in, I'd just like to have the parts ready to go.
Any help is much appreciated!

EDIT:
Suppose I wanted to a run an iPod through into the back of the headunit via RCA cables, would it register under AUX?

This could go one of two ways. The easy way is that the guy who installed the existing radio used an adapter, so the factory harness is intact and you can just snip the wires from the old radio and wire the new one to the adapter. That will take you all of an hour to do including ripping the dash apart and putting it back together.

Possibility number two is that the factory connector was cut off and the existing radio was hard wired in. This means you'll have to snip the wires and hard wire the new radio in. No more difficult than possibility number one, except its much easier to connect wires to an adapter in your living room then go plug it into the Jeep than it is to connect wires directly in the dash. You also have to figure out the factory wire colors and match them to your new radio if this is the case.

Either way, its a fairly simple job and its a good first project if you haven't dealt with wires before. Next thing you know you'll be wiring lights, switches and relays!

I'd like to learn how to do this stuff, but I'm not going to do it unsupervised the first time.
Thanks for the scenarios.

The factory color codes are:
L front speaker + dk grn
L front speaker - brown/red
R front speaker + purple
R front speaker - blue/red

L rear speaker + brown/blue
L rear speaker - brown/yellow
R rear speaker + blue/orange
R rear speaker - blue/white

ground black
lighting sw term orange
ignition term red
always hot yellow
ant/sub control blue/white (or blue)

The ipod hookup will show as aux, and in some units, you have to tell it to activate the aux mode in setup. Hope this helps.

Take the radio out and see if the PO used the wiring harness adapter. If he did, then you're set.

Also, spend the 10.00 and get another head unit dash install kit. It's not that much and will make your install to alot easier.

Just follow the directions and you're set. Nothing to it

JVC KS-FX230 Face Unit

Hi Phil,
I admire your courage to replace your car audio without prior experience!
I hope, you managed to get your Sony unit connected without too much trouble (sparks, blown fuses, etc)!
I've just reinstalled my JVC KS-FX230 Head unit with CD-changer (bought new in 2001) in my Volvo 940.
My face-unit has stopped showing some of the digits, now I am looking for a replacement face unit.
Do you still have it, was yours working OK ?
If so I'am interested in it.
Regards,

Evert
