What happens if you touch the two red wire together? Or better yet, what if you unplug the wires and just let them hang there?

Maybe just unplug the wires and read the level of resistance between the posts. One reading without pushing in the white button, one with button pushed in. If the resistance is really low, ie just showing continuity with button pushed in, the switch will be doing the same thing as touching the wires together.
